
Ospreys Top Flagler 84-67 in Basketball Exhibition

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- The North Florida basketball team had four players in double figures en route to a comfortable 84-67 victory Tuesday night over Flagler College in an exhibition game at UNF Arena.
Andy Diaz scored 14 points to lead the Ospreys followed by 13 for Charles McRoy. Freshman Fred Landers chipped in 11 points with Matt Sauey adding 10.
Chad July posted a 13 point, 10 rebound double-double performance to lead the Saints.
UNF's used a smothering defense to slowly build a lead finishing the night by forcing 24 Flagler turnovers while committing just 10 miscues of their own. The Ospreys tallied 16 steals led by four each from Jimmy Williams and Will Wilson.
The Saints did post a 50-42 advantage in rebounding and connected on nine three-pointers to just five for UNF. The Ospreys shot 45 percent from the floor but struggled from the free throw line going just 19-for-34 (56 percent).
The two squads took turns with the lead early in the first half. North Florida grabbed a 30-20 lead behind a 10-2 run midway through the opening period. The Ospreys then closed the half with a 9-0 spurt for a 41-24 advantage at the break.
UNF maintained a double-digit lead throughout the entire second half and held as large as a 26-point lead, 69-43, with just over six minutes to play. Flagler would score seven of the final nine points of the contest trimming their final deficit to 17.
North Florida now turns its attention to the regular season that begins for UNF on Nov. 11 in Tuscaloosa, Ala., against No. 18 Alabama. The Ospreys regular season home debut is Nov. 14 versus Savannah State.
