Men’s Soccer Falls to USC Upstate

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – The University of North Florida men's soccer team dropped a 2-0 decision to USC Upstate on Sunday afternoon at Hodges Stadium in Jacksonville, Fla. The loss drops the Ospreys to 1-10-0 overall and 0-3-0 in the Atlantic Sun Conference, while the Spartans improve to 5-5-1 and 2-1-1 in league play.
Offensively, Upstate took 21 shots compared to 11 by North Florida. The Spartans recorded eight shots on goal with the Ospreys taking two shots on goal. Teddy Mulamba led all Ospreys with four shots on the day, while Nick May added three shots. Greg Crowell, Mauricio Valderruten, Enrique Haeussler and Oscar Castillo each recorded shots on the afternoon. Crowell and May each posted a shot on goal.
USC Upstate's Jason McCabe picked up his fifth win of the year at goal recording a pair of saves. UNF's Federico Bertele recorded five saves on the afternoon.
The match was physical with the two teams combining for 23 fouls, including 16 by the visitors. The Ospreys were hurt in the 72nd minute as a red card was issued after a hard slide tackle. North Florida was forced to play the final 18 minutes of regulation a man down.
In the 75th minute, USC Upstate broke the scoreless tie with a goal by John Kadane. The Spartans' Grant Kercher sent a through ball to Kadane who shot the ball from 15 yards out and it deflected into the goal past the keeper. The goal was Kadane's second of the season.
The Spartans used a goal in the 89th minute of the match to provide the final margin of victory. USC Upstate's Dylan Hoop netted his team-leading fourth goal of the season. Hoop collected the ball at midfield and beat the last North Florida defender and was able to score on the goalie 1-on-1.
North Florida returns to action next weekend as the Ospreys travel to Nashville, Tenn. to take on Belmont (Friday, Oct. 14) and Lipscomb (Sunday, Oct. 16).
