JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – The University of North Florida men's soccer team hits the road for a pair of pivotal Atlantic Sun Conference matches in Nashville. The Ospreys open up the weekend on Friday, Oct. 14 against Belmont (7 p.m. ET) before concluding the weekend with a match against Lipscomb on Sunday, Oct. 16 (3 p.m. ET).
The Atlantic Sun Conference season is winding down and teams are battling for spots in the upcoming A-Sun Tournament. Jacksonville is currently atop the conference standings with nine points and a perfect 3-0-0 league mark. USC Upstate (2-1-1 A-Sun) is in second place with seven points, while No. 25 Florida Gulf Coast (2-0-0) is tied with Lipscomb for third with six points. Belmont is in fifth (1-1-1) with four points, while Stetson (1-1-1), East Tennessee State (1-3-0) and Mercer (1-3-0) are tied for fifth.
The Ospreys (1-10-0, 0-3-0 A-Sun) enter the weekend after a pair of heartbreaking matches. On Friday, Oct. 7, North Florida had the reigning A-Sun champions East Tennessee State on the ropes, leading 2-1 before a penalty kick in the 89th minute of the match knotted the score at 1-1. In double overtime, the Bucs scored a quick goal for the 3-2 victory. On Sunday, the Ospreys battled USC Upstate even until a late red card shifted momentum. Playing a man down for the final 18 minutes, UNF surrendered a goal in the 75th minute and another in the 89th minute to fall 2-0.
Offensively, senior Enrique Haeussler leads the team with a pair of goals. The striker netted a pair of goals in the Ospreys double overtime match with ETSU for his first multi-goal match of his career. Freshman Mauricio Valderruten, sophomore Josh Ciambella and freshman Oscar Castillo each have a goal apiece on the season for two points each, while freshman Casey Caronis leads the team with assists.
Between the posts, freshman Federico Bertele has started the last nine matches for the Ospreys. He has recorded 38 saves in 820:25 minutes of action. Fellow freshman Ryan Husted has logged minutes at goal for the Ospreys, recording seven saves, a win and a shutout.
Belmont enters the weekend with a 5-6-1 overall record and a 1-1-1 mark in conference play. The Bruins dropped a 2-1 decision to Lipscomb (3-8-2, 2-1-0 A-Sun) in the annual “Battle of the Boulevard” on Sunday night in Nashville. Junior Brandon Tarr became the all-time leader in career goals and points at Belmont with the lone BU score of the defeat. The Bruins opened A-Sun play defeating ETSU (W, 3-1) and tying USC Upstate (T, 0-0).
For Lipscomb, junior Deven Bahadoorsingh scored the match-winning goal with less than nine minutes remaining to lift the Bisons to a 2-1 victory over crosstown nemesis Belmont in one of the rivalry's most thrilling match-ups. The Lipscomb defense set an early tone against the Bruins. Though averaging nearly 13 shots per contest, Belmont was held without a shot attempt in the first half. The same would not be true of Lipscomb, which got 10 shots away and put six on goal in the opening stanza. The Bisons opened up A-Sun play falling to USC Upstate (L, 3-1), but rebounded with a pair of victories against ETSU (W, 2-1) and Belmont (W, 2-1).
North Florida and Belmont have met on the soccer pitch six times with the Bruins holding a 5-1-0 advantage in the series. Last season, UNF was edged 2-1 by BU in overtime in Jacksonville. The Ospreys last victory over the Bruins came on Nov. 2, 2008, when North Florida recorded a 3-2 win at Hodges Stadium.
Against Lipscomb, North Florida leads the all-time series 3-2-1, including a 2-0-1 (.833) record in Nashville. The Ospreys opened the series with three consecutive wins, including a pair of road victories and registered a 2-2 double overtime draw in their last visit to Nashville.
