Complete Game Notes
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- The University of North Florida women's soccer team returns to Jacksonville this weekend for two crucial, late-season conference matches against Belmont and Lipscomb. The Ospreys have just three games remaining in the regular season.
UNF split a pair of Atlantic Sun road matches this past weekend to move into a tie for fourth in the conference standings. The Ospreys dropped a tough 2-1 decision at East Tennessee State, the current conference leader, before grabbing a 2-0 win over USC Upstate on Sunday afternoon.
On Friday, sophomore forward Carolina Lencina's first half goal ended up being for naught as the Ospreys couldn't quite take advantage of their opportunities and fell to ETSU by a 2-1 margin. The Bucs controlled the game after halftime and netted the game-winning goal with just 11:21 left on the clock.
Sunday evening, the Ospreys used sophomore defender Kathryne Husted's third and fourth goals of the season to bounce back with a 2-0 win at USC Upstate. After taking a 1-0 lead into halftime, UNF seized momentum coming out of the break. The Ospreys forced four saves out of the Spartans before Husted completed her brace in the 66th minute to put the game out of reach.
This coming weekend, UNF will play host to a pair of important matches, as the fourth-place Ospreys face Belmont, who joins UNF in a tie for fourth, and Lipscomb, who sits just three points behind in sixth place. Both teams have played one fewer game than the Ospreys.
Belmont, currently 6-6 (3-2 A-Sun) on the season, enters the weekend following consecutive 2-1 losses to ETSU and Lipscomb. Eight different players have scored for Belmont this year, led by freshman Taylor Smith with three goals.
Lipscomb sits at 4-9-1 (2-3 A-Sun) this year and is coming off consecutive home wins over USC Upstate and Belmont. Away from Nashville, however, the Lady Bisons haven't been quite as successful, going winless in six away games thus far. Senior Meghan McGuire leads the Lady Bisons offense, netting five of Lipscomb's 14 goals with just 16 shots. The Lady Bisons will play third-place Jacksonville on Friday before coming to face the Ospreys on Sunday.
The Ospreys will need to sweep the weekend matches to guarantee themselves a spot in the Atlantic Sun tournament, in which only the top six team compete, but will not be eliminated with a loss. Following this weekend, UNF's only remaining game will be at Jacksonville, who currently sits in first place.
Friday's game will begin at 7 p.m., while kickoff on Sunday will be at 1 p.m. Recognition of this season's seniors will take place prior to Sunday's game.
