JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- Despite outshooting the Bruins 18-5, the University of North Florida women's soccer team settled for a scoreless draw against Belmont on Friday. The Ospreys did not concede a shot on goal on the evening.
“We're happy with a draw against a good Belmont team, but we felt like we could have gotten more from the game,” Head Coach Linda Hamilton said. “We didn't play bad by any measure; it was just one of those games.”
UNF controlled the game throughout, providing constant pressure down the flanks and maintaining a high defensive line to make it difficult for Belmont to possess the ball for long periods of time.
In the first half, the Ospreys held the Bruins to just a single shot, an attempt from junior Megan Rock that sailed far over the crossbar, and took six corner kicks to Belmont's one.
The Ospreys also started the second half on the attack, notching two corner kicks and two shots within the first six minutes. The middle of the period was more tightly-contested, before Belmont fired three shots within the last 13 minutes to put UNF on their heels.
In the overtime periods, however, the Ospreys constantly pressed into the attacking third, outshooting the Bruins 5-0 in the extra time. UNF took 12 corner kicks on the evening and held Belmont to just a pair.
Freshman forward Kathryn Shafer paced the UNF offense on the evening, accumulating four shots, including two that demanded saves from Belmont goalkeeper Nicole Berner. Shafer was also the catalyst for multiple counterattacks into the Belmont half.
Sophomore goalkeeper Megan Dorsey did not record a save for the Ospreys en route to her sixth shutout of the season, but broke up multiple offensive efforts in the box by coming off her line on breakaways and corner kicks. Berner was forced to make eight saves for Belmont to maintain the draw.
“It's not quite what we'd hoped for,” said Hamilton.” But we have to refocus and come out ready to play a huge game on Sunday against Lipscomb.”
With the draw, UNF and Belmont remain tied for fourth place in the Atlantic Sun with 10 points. With victories on Friday evening, East Tennessee State, Florida Gulf Coast and Jacksonville all clinched their spots in the six-team A-Sun Tournament with 18, 16 and 16 points, respectively. Mercer sits in sixth place with seven points after their win over Kennesaw State, followed by Lipscomb in seventh place with six points.
UNF will be at Hodges Stadium for the final time in the regular season on Sunday afternoon for Senior Day. The Ospreys will kick off at 1 p.m. against Lipscomb. With a win over the Lady Bisons and a Stetson loss or draw at home against USC Upstate, the Ospreys will clinch a spot in the A-Sun Tournament.
