BOXSCORE
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – After going cold from the field in the second half, the University of North Florida women's basketball team bounced back to outlast Campbell, 65-62 in double overtime on Saturday afternoon in Atlantic Sun Conference action at UNF Arena.
Leading the Ospreys (8-12, 6-5 A-Sun) was Larkira Jones with 13 points and a career-high 18 rebounds. The 18 rebound mark ties her for fifth in the UNF single game record book. Brittany Kirkland led the Ospreys' scorers with 15 points. Jadhken Kerr added 13 points while Taylor Smith had nine points and grabbed 10 rebounds. Juliemay Syquio handed out eight assists, grabbed seven rebounds and hit seven points.
UNF shot just 26.7 percent (8-of-30) in the second half and went on a 11 minute draught, but fought back in the overtime periods to shoot 50-percent from the field, pushing past the Camels (8-12, 7-4 A-Sun).
“I am really proud of how we battled,” said head coach Mary Tappmeyer. “Obviously Jake's [Jadhken Kerr] shot was huge. I thought defensively in the first half was about as good of defense as we've played in a long time. In the second half they started penetrating and we didn't do a very good job defending against the penetration. I thought we attacked well in the first half, but in the second half we didn't really stay in attack mode. Kira [Larkira Jones] was huge rebounding wise with 18. Today's game was so similar to that first game with the big three pointers to send the game into overtime.”
The Camels were led by Tonisha Baker with 19 points. Monique Spry added 11 points and Katelyn Bass pulled down 13 rebounds.
UNF took a 10-4 lead six minutes into the game, but the Camels went on a 5-0 run to cut the lead down to one with 13:23 on the clock. The Ospreys stretched their lead back to seven (16-9) midway through the half and maintained the advantage over the next several minutes. Campbell closed the gap to four (22-18) with 5:29 remaining in the half, but that is as close as the Camels would get as UNF took a nine point, 31-22 lead into the break.
The Ospreys extended their lead coming out of the break, taking a 14 point, 38-24 advantage with 16:37 on the clock. UNF claimed its largest lead of the game, up 15 (45-30) with 12:44 remaining in the half. That would be the Ospreys last field goal for the next 11 minutes as the Camels cut into the lead and tied it at 46 with 3:26 left in the half.
Campbell took the lead for the first time in the half, up with just over two minutes remaining. The two teams were tied at 50 with just over a minute left, but a jumper and a free throw gave the Camels a three point advantage with five seconds remaining. UNF brought the ball down the court and Syquio found Kerr on top of the key for a three to send the game into its first overtime.
In the first overtime the two teams traded baskets with a layup from freshman Jade Givens knotting the score at 57 with 2:13 to play. Neither team would score again, sending the game into the second overtime.
The Camels took a quick three point lead in the second overtime, but a three pointer from Kerr tied the game at 61 with 3:11 on the clock. UNF scored the next four points, taking a 65-61 lead. Campbell would get on the board one last time, but the Ospreys held on for the win.
UNF shot 36.6 percent (26-of-71) from the field for the game, but shot 50 percent in the overtime period. The Ospreys connected on 41.2 percent (7-of-17) from three point range. Campbell knocked down 33.3 percent (24-of-72) from the field and 13 percent (3-of-23) from outside. The two teams were close on the boards with Campbell holding the slight 53-51 advantage.
The Ospreys will remain at home to host Lipscomb on Thursday, Feb. 3 in a 5:30 p.m. contest at UNF Arena.
