BOXSCORE
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – The University of North Florida women's basketball team defeated Lipscomb, 58-46 on Thursday evening in Atlantic Sun Conference action at UNF Arena.
Freshman Jade Givens led a balanced UNF (9-12, 7-5 A-Sun) attack with 14 points. Sophomore Jadhken Kerr and junior Brittany Kirkland had nine points each. Sophomore Larkira Jones grabbed a game-high nine rebounds and tallied a career-high tying five blocks.
“I was really proud of our defensive intensity and effort in the first half,” said head coach Mary Tappmeyer. “I thought we did a really good job of guarding them and forcing them to take tough shots. Our defense wasn't as good in the second half and we missed some easy scoring opportunities. That affected our mindset and that is something we have to learn to overcome; when we're not scoring we need to get defensive stops. Again we didn't take very good care of the basketball and that's something we've been struggling with all season.”
The Lady Bison (8-15, 5-9 A-Sun) were led by Anna Bowers with 11 points. Hannah Philips added 10 points and grabbed a team-best eight rebounds.
UNF got out early in the opening half, taking a five point, 9-4 lead after five and half minutes of play. Lipscomb cut the lead down to one (9-8), but the Ospreys went on a 7-0 run to go up 16-8 with 10:13 left in the half. The Lady Bison got it down to six, 18-12 with just over eight minutes to go, but the Ospreys scored the next eight points to extend their lead to 26-12 with 4:46 on the clock. Lipscomb would again look to make a run before the break, cutting the lead down to seven (26-19), but the Ospreys closed out the half with a 6-0 run to take a 32-19 lead into the half.
Coming out of the break, the Ospreys extend their lead to 18 (39-21) in the opening two minutes. The Ospreys maintained a double digit lead, and were up 45-27 before the Lady Bison went on a 13-1 run to cut the lead down to six, 46-40, with 6:25 left to play. UNF extended its lead back to 12 (53-41) with just over two minutes to go. The Lady Bison again looked to make a late run, closing the gap to nine, 53-44,, but the Ospreys held on for the 58-46 win.
The Ospreys shot 41.2 percent (21-of-51) from the field and 57.1 percent (4-of-7) from outside the arc. Lipscomb connected on 30.0 percent (15-of-50) and 35.3 percent (6-of-17) from three point range.
