JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – The University of North Florida men's soccer team kicks off the 2010 home season with a match against Georgia Southern on Wednesday, Sept. 15 at Hodges Stadium at 7 p.m.
The Ospreys will look to rebound after a pair of losses on the road at the UAB “Soccer for a Cure” Classic. UNF dropped the season opener 6-0 to Memphis, before falling to tournament-host UAB 4-1 the following day.
North Florida and Georgia Southern have met on the pitch seven times with the series tied at 3-3-1 overall. The last five meetings have been even with the two teams tied at 2-2-1 and each match being decided by one goal. Last season, the Eagles escaped Jacksonville with a 1-0 victory over the Ospreys on Nov. 3. UNF won the 2008 meeting 1-0 in Statesboro, Ga. The last victory for the Ospreys in Jacksonville came on Oct. 17, 2006, as North Florida clamed a 3-2 victory at Hodges Stadium.
Early in the season, the Ospreys are led by senior Adam O'Neill and true freshman Ricky Lawrence. O'Neill leads the team in points with two, scoring UNF's only goal so far this season. After a tremendous preseason, Lawrence has continued his solid play, adding an assist on O'Neill's goal for his first collegiate point.
The goal against UAB was O'Neill's 22nd of his career and placed the senior just three goals behind Victor Duncan (2002-04) for fourth on UNF's all-time goals scored list. O'Neill moved to seventh all-time in UNF history in points scored. With the goal, the London, England native has 51 career points, placing him just one point shy of Nate Silva (1991-94) for sixth all time.
The Ospreys are 87-55-13 (.603) all-time at Hodges Stadium. Last season, North Florida collected half of its wins at home.
Single-game tickets for men's matches are $5 for adults and $3 for youth 17-and-under and senior citizens 55-and-older. Children 2-and-under and any current UNF student with a valid Osprey1 Card are admitted free. Student guest passes for those events are $3 and limited to one per student.
