BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The University of North Florida men's soccer team dropped the final match of the UAB “Soccer for a Cure” Classic to the tournament-host Blazers by a final score of 4-1 on Saturday night in Birmingham, Ala.
UAB captured the Classic title for the seventh time in the event's 13-year history, and it is the Blazers' first title since the 2007 event. Freshman Austin Doyle and junior Julian Botella were each named to the All-Tournament Team for their efforts in the classic.
Senior captain Adam O'Neill paced the Osprey attack, recording four of UNF's seven shots on the night. The Preseason All-Atlantic Sun Selection made his only shot on goal count as he netted North Florida's first goal of the season.
The goal was O'Neill's 22nd of his career and placed the senior just three goals behind Victor Duncan (2002-04) for fourth on UNF's all-time goals scored list. O'Neill moved to seventh all-time in UNF history in points scored. With the goal, the London, England native has 51 career points, placing him just one point shy of Nate Silva (1991-94) for sixth all time.
Freshman standout Ricky Lawrence added the assist on O'Neill's goal for the first point of his collegiate career.
Senior Sebastian Bianchi and freshmen Doyle and Patrik Lippe each added shots on the night with Lippe's shot coming on goal.
Freshman Tyler Willets took the loss for the Ospreys. Willets earned the start for injured goalie Andrew Calise. Despite surrendering four goals on the night, the true freshman recorded seven saves in his first collegiate start.
UAB outshot the Ospreys 20-to-7 on the night, recording 11 shots on goal compared to just two by UNF.
The Ospreys fell behind 1-0 in the 17th minute of the match. UAB's Babayele Sodade scored his fourth goal of the young season. Sodade scored on a rocket from 25 yards out into the top right corner of the goal off of an assist from Kevin Sawchak.
The Blazers added a second goal in the 57th minute. UAB's Kofi Gyawu converted a header off of a cross from Flo Liu and put the ball into the far post for the goal. The goal was Gyawu's first of the season.
UAB added a third goal in the 65th minute of the match. Chris Ushedo shot the ball over the goalkeeper's head from approximately six yards out to give the hosts a commanding lead. Reed Matte and Mlladen Lemez were each credited with an assist on Ushedo's first goal of the year.
Just a little over three minutes later, UAB added another goal. Sodade scored his second goal of the match and fifth of the season off of an assist from Sawchak to put the Blazers ahead 4-0.
O'Neill scored his first goal of the season in the 84th minute as the senior took a pass from Lawrence and put it in the back of the net. The goal was the first of the season for the Ospreys, but it came too late as the Blazers' lead was insurmountable.
North Florida opens the 2010 home season on Wednesday, Sept. 15 with a match against Georgia Southern. The match against the Eagles is slated for 7 p.m. at Hodges Stadium.
