
Ospreys, Spartans to Meet at Harmon Stadium

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – The University of North Florida baseball team is set to take on USC Upstate in a three-game Atlantic Sun Conference matchup. UNF and USC Upstate take the field on Saturday, April 10, at 1 p.m. for a doubleheader at Dusty Rhodes Field at Harmon Stadium. The two teams conclude the series with a single game Sunday, April 11, at 1 p.m.
North Florida is 26-2 overall against USC Upstate. UNF won the first 20 meetings between the two schools before the Spartans won a game on March 21, 2008, by a score of 12-5. The Ospreys have won four out of the last five meetings between the two teams. UNF is 15-1 all-time against USC Upstate at Harmon Stadium.
The Ospreys enter the weekend 17-15 overall after splitting a pair of games against No. 7 Florida State. North Florida downed FSU, 3-1, on Tuesday night at the Baseball Grounds of Jacksonville. The Seminoles downed the Ospreys 9-2 in Tallahassee on Wednesday night.
North Florida is 6-3 in the Atlantic Sun Conference after winnings series with Jacksonville (2-1), Campbell (2-1) and East Tennessee State (2-1). USC Upstate is currently 1-11 with its lone victory coming against Belmont.
The University of North Florida has always prided itself on homegrown talent and 2010 is no different. Of the 34 players on the Ospreys roster, thirty-two (32) players are from the Sunshine State. One player hails from Georgia, while the remaining player on the roster is from Hong Kong, China.
USC Upstate, which has lost six straight, will head into the series with senior Jimmy Tanner just three hits away from becoming one of seven players in school history to reach 50 hits in three straight seasons. Tanner is currently tied for fourth in school history with 227 career hits and 17th with 108 runs. Tanner has started 119 consecutive games for the Spartans since not finding his name in the lineup for the second game of a doubleheader at UNF on March 22, 2008.
Senior Tyler Oliver is currently fourth in USC Upstate history with 71 career appearances. Senior Matt Branham joined Scott Eckard '08 as the only pitchers in school history to strike out 50 batters in three straight seasons. Branham is third in the A-Sun with 50 strikeouts in 44 innings.
