JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – The University of North Florida baseball team is set to host Bethune-Cookman in a midweek game at Dusty Rhodes Field at Harmon Stadium on Tuesday, April 13, at 7 p.m. The Ospreys will look to claim their 900th win in school history.
North Florida enters the week with a 20-15 overall record and a 9-3 mark in Atlantic Sun Conference play. The Ospreys swept a three-game conference series with USC Upstate over the weekend, outscoring the Spartans 40-3.
UNF won the first game in mercy-rule fashion, defeating Upstate 16-3 in seven innings. In game two, senior pitcher Michael Kelly tossed his second complete game shutout of the season as UNF won, 14-0. In the final game of the series, senior hurler John Atteo tossed a complete game shutout of his own as the Ospreys defeated the Spartans, 10-0, to complete the sweep.
On the weekend, the Ospreys boasted a team earned run average of 1.08, while hitting a healthy .477. The pitching staff allowed just three runs on the weekend, while the UNF offense scored 40 runs on 53 hits, including nine doubles, a triple and six home runs.
Bethune-Cookman enters the midweek contest 19-13 overall and a perfect 6-0 in the MEAC. The Wildcats enter the week on a four-game winning streak. Bethune-Cookman defeated Stetson (W, 14-3) on the road, before sweeping North Carolina A&T over the weekend, winning 13-3, 11-7 and 13-3, respectively.
North Florida and Bethune-Cookman met up earlier this season with the Ospreys claiming a 3-2 victory at Jackie Robinson Ballpark snapping the Wildcats' nine-game winnings streak.
The Ospreys received stellar pitching performances from starting pitcher John Atteo and closer Casey Medlen.
Atteo scattered seven hits in 7.0 innings of work with only one extra base hit. The senior allowed just two earned runs in the game. Atteo fanned five batters and did not issue a walk. At one point, Atteo retired seven batters in a row and nine of 11.
Atteo was relieved by Medlen who worked two perfect innings to earn his first save of the season. He struck out two batters on the night, ending each inning he worked with a K.
Offensively, UNF collected just four hits, but made its hits count as three of the four hits were extra base hits. Senior T.J. Thompson hit a three-run homer that proved to be the difference in the game. Senior Preston Hale added a pair of doubles and also scored a run.
