JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – The University of North Florida softball team found its bats in the second game of the UCF Invitational in Orlando, Fla. on Saturday with a 4-0 victory over FAMU, but was unsuccessful against South Carolina losing 9-0 in five innings.
UNF's (2-9) junior Caroline Torre jump-started the Ospreys' bats going 2-for-3 on the day with two RBI that gave North Florida its first runs of the day to go past the Rattlers in the second game.
In the game against in-state rival FAMU the Ospreys scored three runs in the bottom of the third inning. The inning began with a single by freshman Jackie Reese, and then sophomores Ariana Godwin and Britanie Block were able to drop bunt singles to load the bases for Torre who singled down the left field line to drive in two runs. Senior Devyn Findley would follow with a shot up the middle sending block home for 3-0 lead.
The Ospreys scored one more run in the fourth inning but it was not needed with the lights out performance by Findley (2-6) who registered 11 strikeouts and gave up only two hits for her third complete game of the season. The Alachua, Fla. native currently leads the Atlantic Sun Conference in strikeouts with her 59 on the season.
Godwin was another key batter the Ospreys needed to heat up. Godwin went 2-for-2 with a run scored. In her second at bat she was able to showcase her speed with an infield single to the shortstop that was soon followed by her first stolen base of the season.
The Ospreys will be back for the last day of the tournament Sunday, Feb. 21st for their 9 a.m. game against Villanova.
