
LIU Holds Off UNF

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – After a first half scoring drought, put the University of North Florida women's basketball team down 19 at the break, the Ospreys cut the lead down to 10 in the second half, but would get no closer as Long Island claimed a 58-40 win on Friday afternoon in non-conference action at UNF Arena.
Leading the Ospreys (2-9) was Juliemay Syquio with nine points. Jadhken Kerr and Raneisha Lamar added seven points. Kerr and Lamar also led on the boards with seven rebounds each.
The Blackbirds (8-4) were led by Ashley Palmer with 20 points and eight rebounds. Krystal Wells and Kiara Evans added 13 and 10 points, respectively.
UNF jumped out in the first half, scoring the first three field goals of the game. The Blackbirds tied up the game at seven. The two teams traded baskets over the next few possessions and were tied 11 at the 12:13 mark. UNF trailed by two at the 10:08 mark after a jumper from Taylor Smith. That marked the last field goal of the half for the Ospreys as LIU closed out the half with a 19-0 run, tak ing a 32-13 lead into the break.
Coming out of the intermission, the Blackbirds took their largest lead of the game up 22 (37-15) after the first minute of play. The Ospreys answered with a 17-5 run to cut the lead down to 10, 42-32 with 8:37 left on the clock. LIU again held UNF scoreless with a 10-0 run to extend the lead back to 20 (52-32) with 3:40 left to play.UNF would get no closer than 16 in the final minutes as the Blackbirds claimed the win.
The Ospreys shot 28.6 percent (16-of-56) from the field and 15.0 percent (3-of-20) from behind the arc while the Blackbirds hit 42.9 percent (21-of-49) from the field and 33.3 percent (5-of-15) from three point range. UNF knocked down 50.0 percent (5-of-10) from the free throw line to 64.7 percent (11-of-17) by the Blackbirds.
UNF gave the ball up 19 times while forcing 18 turnovers by LIU. The Blackbirds held the 41 to 34 advantage on the boards.
North Florida will be back in action on Wednesday, January 5 in a 5:15 p.m. contest at Campbell. The game begins a three game Atlantic Sun road swing for the Ospreys.
