BATON ROUGE, La. – Paced by a pair of Top 15 individual finishers, the University of North Florida golf team finished tied for fourth-place Tuesday at the Second-annual David Toms Intercollegiate hosted by LSU at the Country Club of Louisiana.
Junior Major Forbess matched his career-best round with a two-under-par 70, while fellow junior Kevin Aylwin carded a one-over 73 in leading the Ospreys to a final round 293 and a 54-hole total of 866. Aylwin was the squad's top finisher tying for 8th at 212 with Forbess earning a 12th-place tie with 213.
“We finished up the fall season with a real solid performance,” said UNF head coach Scott Schroeder. “Major (Forbess) carried us today, and he and Kevin (Aylwin) both had real nice finishes for the week. Kevin was real close to having a great week but had a rough hole on 16. We now head into the offseason and looking forward to taking a little break.”
The remainder of UNF's lineup at the David Toms Intercollegiate included junior Joe Byun tied for 43rd (221), senior Chris Kennedy in 45th (222) and sophomore Joey Marino tied for 75th (242).
Tournament host LSU led the event wire-to-wire capturing the team title with a three-round 848 and a two-stroke advantage over runner-up Arkansas at 850. South Alabama (855), North Florida and MTSU (866) rounded out the Top Five. Southeastern Louisiana finished sixth at 873 followed by Ole Miss (874), Louisiana-Lafayette (875), Kansas State (876), Mississippi State (879), UAB (883), Louisiana Tech (888), Georgia Southern (892) and Rice (893).
LSU's Austin Gutgsell, who played as an individual, earned the individual medalist crown with a 10-under 206 finish.
UNF now takes about three months off from competition before returning Jan. 31 for the JU Invitational in Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla.
