SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Senior captain Adam O'Neill tied a school record with his seventh career match-winning goal, lifting the University of North Florida to a 2-1 victory over USC Upstate at County University Soccer Stadium. With the win, the Ospreys improve to 2-7-0 overall and 1-3-0 in the Atlantic Sun.
O'Neill scored just his second goal of the season, but made it count as the senior collected a loose ball in the box with the match tied 1-1 in the 79th minute, putting it in the back of the net for the deciding goal. The senior now has seven career match-winning goals, tying him for first in North Florida history. O'Neill ties Akil Defreitas (2007-08) and Peter Sesay (1996, 98-99) for the top spot.
In addition to his record-tying goal, the senior reached several other milestones in the match. O'Neill has now played in 63 matches, tying him for eighth in UNF history. Also, he moved into fifth all-time in matches started. O'Neill moved into sixth place on UNF's career points list with 53 points and ranks fifth with 23 goals scored. The London native took just one shot, but is now tied with Mark Romano (1991-95) for second place in career shots and is one shot on goal behind Sesay for the all-time school record.
Junior Enrique Haeussler scored the first goal of the night. He scored from the left side of the box off of a cross by freshman Ricky Lawrence. The goal was Haeussler's second of the season and the helper was Lawrence's team-leading third of the season.
Junior Andrew Calise earned his first win of the season of the season, playing all 90 minutes between the posts for the Ospreys. He recorded just one save, but excellent defense by UNF limited Upstate to just a pair of shots on goal.
The match was even with both teams taking five shots apiece. Neither team was able to muster any offense in the first half, as UNF took just one shot in the first half compared to none by the host Spartans. Upstate took five shots in the second half compared to four by North Florida. Each team had three shots on goal with the Ospreys recording a pair of saves, while the Spartans had just one.
UNF dominated Upstate in corner kicks, out kicking the Spartans 10-to-3. The fouls for both teams were relatively even with North Florida getting called 14 times compared to 11 fouls by USC Upstate. The Spartans were flagged for three offsides penalties, while the Ospreys were called offsides once.
With the score tied 0-0 in the 56th minute, Haeussler took a cross from Lawrence from the left side of the box for the first goal of the match.
Nearly 20 minutes later, USC Upstate's Maurice Beggs headed the ball off of a corner by Timo Foerster to tie the score, 1-1.
In the 79th minute, O'Neill broke the tie with his second goal of the season and the 23rd goal of his UNF career.
The Osprey defense stood strong for the final 10 minutes of the match preserving the 2-1 victory.
