JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – The University of North Florida men's soccer team will play a pair of Atlantic Sun Conference road matches this weekend. The Ospreys open up the weekend with a match Friday, Oct. 15, at USC Upstate and concludes the weekend with a match Sunday, Oct. 16, against East Tennessee State.
North Florida enters Friday's match with a 1-7-0 record (0-3-0 A-Sun). The Ospreys lone victory of the season came on Sept. 18, when they defeated Longwood, 1-0. To open conference play, the Ospreys fell at home to Jacksonville, 1-0, on Oct. 3, before falling at home to Belmont (L, 1-2 OT, Oct. 8) and Lipscomb (L, 2-3, Oct. 10).
True freshman Ricky Lawrence leads UNF in assists (2), points (6), shots (11) and shots on-goal. Lawrence is tied for the team lead in goals (2) with sophomore captain Greg Crowell. The Ospreys have used three different goal keepers this season, with Tyler Willetts seeing the majority of time. In 545 minutes of action, Willets owns a GAA of 1.82, making 37 saves while allowing eight goals.
USC Upstate is 1-7-3 overall with a 0-4-0 mark in the conference. The match will be played at USC Upstate's County University Soccer Stadium. Since moving into County University Soccer Stadium, the Upstate men's soccer program has been tough to beat. Upstate is 59-22-7 at the confines of County University Soccer Stadium for a winning percentage of .710. Overall, Upstate is 228-56-17 at home for a .786 winning percentage in Spartanburg. Upstate played its first season in the quad behind the Administrative Building prior to moving to historic Rifle Field in 1981. The Spartans (then, the Rifles) tallied a 162-30-10 record for a .802 winning percentage at Rifle Field.
UNF is 4-8-1 all-time against USC Upstate and 1-4-0 against the Spartans in Spartanburg. The Ospreys lone win came the last time the two teams met in Spartanburg on Oct. 5, 2008, when UNF defeated Upstate, 3-0.
East Tennessee State enters the weekend with a 7-4-0 overall record and a 2-2-0 A-Sun record. ETSU is fourth in the Atlantic Sun with six points in conference play, tied with Campbell, Lipscomb and Belmont. However, since Florida Gulf Coast is not eligible for postseason play, if the conference tournament started today, the Buccaneers would be the No. 3 seed.
ETSU is a perfect 5-0-0 this season at Summers-Taylor Stadium. The Bucs will take on Jacksonville on Friday before facing the Ospreys on Sunday. The series record between UNF and ETSU is tied at 1-1-0 with each team winning on its opponents' home field.
Both matches this weekend will be broadcast on ASun.TV. The price is $5.99 per event or $9.99 for a month subscription. Yearly subscriptions are available for just $69.99. To purchase an event CLICK HERE.
