The Ospreys won all six singles matches for the second day in a row
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – The University of North Florida women's tennis team improved to 2-0 in dual matches on the year with a 7-0 victory over Iowa State on Sunday afternoon.
The Ospreys won the doubles point and proceeded to sweep the singles matches for the win. North Florida is now 12-0 in singles matches on the year, having swept UTEP on Saturday, Jan. 30.
“I think it was a very good win for our program,” head coach Rodrigo Puebla stated after the match. “Playing someone from the Big 12 is always tough. They have a very tough conference and Iowa State just lost to Minnesota, who is No. 68 in the country, 4-3. We played well under the conditions. It was cold and extremely windy. That just shows that we have a good team. It will be a long season, but I think we are getting ready for conference which is in a few weeks.”
The Ospreys started the day by winning the doubles point. The tandem of Danielle Day and Lauren Holton made short work of Iowa State's Tessa Lang and Maria Fernanda Macedo, winning 8-3 in the No. 2 spot. UNF's Melanie Aguirre and Victoria Krook fell behind 5-0 at No. 3 doubles, but battled back to pull to 7-6 before falling 8-6.
In the deciding doubles match, North Florida's Aline Berkenbrock and Raquel Castro needed a tiebreaker to hold of ISU's Erin Karonis and Jenna Langhorst. The duo won the match 9-8 after claiming a 7-4 victory in the tiebreaker.
In singles action, Castro wasted little time dispensing of Macedo, winning 6-2, 6-0. She lost just one point in the second set, finishing well before any other singles match. No. 5 singles finished next with Aguirre claiming a 6-4, 6-3 victory to give the Ospreys a 3-0 advantage.
Berkenbrock clinched the overall match with her victory at No. 1 singles. She defeated Karonis in straight sets, 6-2 and 7-5, to secure the win for the Ospreys.
Day won 6-3 and 7-5 at No. 3 singles, followed by Krook at No. 4 singles (6-4, 7-6 (4)). Holton kept the Ospreys perfect on the day with a victory at No. 6. After winning the first set, 6-1, she dropped the second set 6-4 to set up a tiebreaker. In the tiebreaker, she won 10-8 to give UNF the 7-0 win.
The UNF women's tennis team returns to action on Saturday, Feb. 6, as the Ospreys play host to South Carolina State. The match is slated for 11 a.m. at the UNF Tennis Complex.
