JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – The University of North Florida women's tennis opened up its dual-match season with a 6-0 win against UTEP Saturday at UNF's Tennis Complex.
“This is a great win for our team and a good way to start off the season at home,” said head women's tennis coach Rodrigo Puebla. “As long as our team continues to work and get better everyday, we will have a competitive team when our conference matches roll around.”
After a delayed start from 11 a.m. to around 2:50 p.m., the Ospreys (1-0) were able to overcome the weather and the Minors, with winds up to 16 mph and a temperature that was just cool enough to freeze-up UTEP's play.
“Days like these are tough with the weather to get a good rhythm but I'm proud of our team for fighting through it and doing what was needed to be done,” Puebla said after the match.
Aline Berkenbrock started the day off right by defeating Martina Trierweiler (6-1, 6-0) in a match that took about 35 minutes to finish.
Berkenbrock's doubles partner from last week's third place finish in the Hilton Garden Inn Eagle Invite, Raquel Castro, won her match against UTEP's newcomer Dariya Abdrakhmanova (6-4, 6-3). Of the matches played, the No. 2 singles match was closely contended and came down to technique as a result of the difficult cross-winds.
Fellow Ospreys, Victoria Krook, Melanie Aguirre and Lauren Holton took care of UTEP handedly with the Minors not being able to score more than two games against North Florida's No. 4, 5 and 6 players, respectively.
With the match already in hand for the Ospreys and the potential of rain in the area, both teams decided to forego playing doubles.
The Ospreys will be back in action against Iowa State on Sunday, Jan. 31, at the UNF Tennis Complex. The match was scheduled for a 10 a.m. start time, but due to possible temperatures in the 40's, the match will begin an hour later at 11 a.m.
