UNF Women’s Tennis Set to Open Dual Play at Home

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – The University of North Florida women's tennis team is set to open the 2010 home schedule on Saturday, Jan. 30 when it hosts UTEP at 11:00 a.m. The Ospreys will continue their home stand with a match against Iowa State on Sunday, Jan. 31 at 10 a.m. Both matches will be played at the UNF Tennis Complex.
The Ospreys opened the 2010 season Jan. 16-18 at the Hilton Garden Inn Eagle Invitational hosted by Florida Gulf Coast. Freshman Melanie Aguirre won the singles flight six title by defeating No. 19 Arkansas' Fernanda Perrotta. She also teamed up with junior Victoria Krook to win the doubles flight three by defeating No. 75 South Florida's duo of Jessica Zok and Natalia Guevara.
In the flight one doubles senior Raquel Castro and sophomore Aline Berkenbrock picked up third place after defeating Purdue's pair of Michelle Sammons and Jennifer Rabot. Junior Lauren Holton also won third place by defeating FGCU's Farah Leclercq in the singles flight five.
Castro and Berkenbrock are currently ranked No. 10 in the ITA Southeast Regional Doubles rankings. Last season the pair tallied a 17-4 record and defeated No. 30 ranked FIU's No. 1 duo of Maria Pazo and Mariana Muci. They also defeated the No. 59 tandem of Jenny Frisell and Elvira Serrot of UCF last year.
This is the first match of the spring season for UTEP. The Miners won a school record tying 16 matches last season, advancing to the quarterfinals of the 2009 Conference USA tournament.
Iowa State opened the spring season with a 4-3 loss to No. 69 Minnesota. The Cyclones finished with a 10-12 overall record and 1-10 in the Big 12. The Big 12 had six teams ranked in the preseason ITA poll.
