The Ospreys fell to 4-2 on the year in dual meets
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – The University of North Florida swimming and diving team opened up the second half of the season with a home loss to UNC-Wilmington, 135-106, on Saturday, Jan. 2, at the UNF Aquatic Center.
The meet was close through the first five events with the Seahawks holding a slight 49-44 advantage. After a pair of diving events and four more swimming events, UNCW extended its lead to 119-86 with just two events remaining in the meet.
“I was a little disappointed,” head coach Beth Harrell remarked after the meet. “I thought we had a good shot at UNC-Wilmington and we didn't seize the opportunity. We didn't get the job done like I hoped we would. UNC-Wilmington is a great team that has always been real stiff competition for us. Some of our swims were good, but we were kind of broken down after some hard Christmas training.”
UNF took first in five swimming events on the day and one diving event. Junior Lyn Ann Nelson won a pair of events, while junior Megan Boudreau, sophomore Taylor Crosby and freshman Sara Evans each won a race. True freshman Julia Moomaw won one of the diving events.
Nelson won the 1,000-yard freestyle (10:30.92), as well as the 500 free (5:11.90). She won the 1,000 free by just five-hundredths of a second out-touching UNCW's Meredith Banks. Junior transfer Caroline Larsson took third in the event (10:56.08).
Boudreau won the 200 free with a time of 1:57.75 and finished second behind Nelson in the 500 free (5:14.98). In addition, Boudreau swam the second leg of the UNF 400 free relay team that finished second (3:41.55).
“Megan has got that talent,” Harrell commented. “Her freshman year she did real well, but her sophomore year, she had some other things going on and didn't feel that good in the water. It was hard to get her to where her times were her freshman year. She is on target now just like she was her first year. I think she will have a great year. She's really got her head back together. She is training really well and will be a solid competitor.”
Evans won the 200 individual medley (2:14.01) and took second in the 200 breaststroke (2:29.01). UNF finished first, second and third in the 200 breaststroke, as Taylor Crosby (2:27.74) won the event and freshman Katie England (2:30.39) claimed third in the event. Sophomore Amanda Anderson (2:15.56) took third in the 200 IM with Taylor Crosby (2:16.75) finishing fourth.
Moomaw took first in the 3-meter diving with a score of 250.79. She finished second in the 1-meter diving by just 2.02 points (229.49).
North Florida will return to the pool for competition with a meet against Radford on Saturday, Jan. 9, at 5 p.m. at the UNF Aquatic Center.
