Preckajlo stays hot at plate, Kelly is sharp on mound
Box Score
SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Justin Preckajlo continued his hot hitting while Michael Kelly threw six shutout innings to help the University of North Florida baseball team capture a weekend series at USC Upstate with a 6-2 victory.
The two teams split a doubleheader on Saturday before UNF (21-28, 14-13 A-Sun) got off to an early 5-0 advantage and never looked back in the victory against the Spartans (14-35, 4-23 A-Sun).
Preckajlo followed up a day that saw him slug a pair of home runs and collect four hits overall in Saturday's doubleheader with a season finale that included a 4-for-5 performance at the plate, two runs and two RBIs. Preckajlo came up a home run short of hitting for the cycle as he collected two singles, a double and a triple. For the weekend, the junior hit .500, slugged 1.125 and drove home eight runs. Five of his eight hits went for extra bases.
Preckajlo got the scoring started for the Ospreys Sunday when he reached on an infield single to lead off the top of the second inning and eventually came around to score when Steve Hillan reached on a throwing error. David Eldredge also scored on the play to give the Ospreys a 2-0 advantage.
UNF was back at it in the top of the third, scoring three runs on three-straight doubles by Preston Hale, TJ Thompson and Preckajlo along with an RBI groundout by Robbie Collier.
That was enough support for Kelly, who allowed only four hits and two walks in six innings. Kelly (1-3) gave way Ty Pryor in the seventh to finish the contest he started. Pryor allowed a pair of runs in the eighth and ninth innings but never allowed the Spartans any closer than that in earning the three inning save.
UNF pounded out 10 hits in the win with Eldredge and Hale each collecting two hits apiece.
The Ospreys return to action on Tuesday when they head to South Florida to complete a game that was suspended due to rain on Wednesday. UNF held a 7-6 advantage in that game when play was suspended. Following the completion of that game the Ospreys and Bulls will square off in a regularly scheduled contest.
