BUIES CREEK, N.C. (April 21, 2009) – Thanks to big moves by a trio of Ospreys, the University of North Florida golf team inched closer to the top of the leaderboard on day two of the Atlantic Sun Championship at Keith Hills Country Club.
Jeff Dennis vaulted into third place after shooting a 3-under-par 69 on Tuesday, helping UNF to the second-best round of the day with a team score of 284 (-4). The Ospreys trimmed
“We played well today, and we gave ourselves a chance,” UNF head coach Scott Schroeder said. “We finished well after a little bit of a rough stretch to open the back nine.”
Sophomore Chris Kennedy and freshman Kevin Aylwin did their part to help UNF on Tuesday, each shooting rounds of 70 (-2). Kennedy jumped into the top 10 thanks to three birdies on the front nine to go along with eight pars and a bogey on the back. He is 2-under-par for the tournament and four strokes off the individual lead. Aylwin matched Kennedy's 70, shaking off a double bogey on the 11th hole with birdies on the 14th and 18th holes.
Dennis also closed strong with a birdie on the par-3 17th hole that pulled him within one stroke of
“Jeff is playing well in what might be his last event,” Schroeder said. “He has a chance to win his first collegiate golf tournament tomorrow and help extend his season and the rest of the team's season. We are going to need four good rounds tomorrow.”
A victory by the Ospreys would qualify the team for an NCAA Regional for the second-straight year.
Freshman Joe Byun helped the Ospreys' cause with an eagle on the par-5 18th hole to shoot 75, while Jordan Gibb was one stroke behind him. Byun and Aylwin are both tied for 36th in the individual standings, 10 spots behind Gibb.
UNF's score of 4-under-par for the tournament puts the Ospreys four strokes in front of Kennesaw State (even) and seven ahead of Florida Gulf Coast (+3). Mercer rounds out the top five at +5.
The Ospreys are back on the course for Wednesday's final round beginning at 8:45 a.m.
