Ospreys record largest win ever over Campbell
BUIES CREEK, N.C. - Not even a soggy day could keep the University of North Florida baseball team from lighting up the scoreboard against Campbell on Friday.
UNF (10-16, 4-6 Atlantic Sun Conference) capitalized on a season-high nine walks and hammered out 10 hits in a rain-shortened 13-3 six- inning win over the Camels. It was the Ospreys' largest margin of victory this season and in the all- time series with Campbell.
The Ospreys began with an eight-run assault in the first two innings, which was aided by six walks. UNF tagged Campbell starter Josh Fish for five runs before he was pulled from the after only recording one out. Junior TJ Thompson highlighted the Ospreys' bombardment in the first inning with a two- run double to right field.
Junior Preston Hale deepened the Camels' (11-11, 2-7) wounds in the top of the second when he crushed a two-run home run that slipped just inside the foul pole in left field. Thompson followed it up with a moon shot home run to right field, giving the Ospreys an 8-0 lead.
Redshirt freshman Andrew Karmeris would have made it back-to-back-to-back homers when he destroyed a Logan Davis pitch to left field, but the ball hooked just foul. Karmeris got back to work in the top of the fourth when he led off with a double in what laid the foundation for a four-run inning.
Junior Kevin Martin drove in Karmeris with a single to right field, which was later followed by a Sam Perry RBI single. Smith cleaned up the scraps with a two-run triple to the gap in left center.
Campbell finally retaliated in the bottom of the fourth on an RBI single by Alex Aycoth. The Camels put up two more runs in the bottom of the sixth, but it wasn't nearly enough to overtake the Ospreys.
UNF actually had scored four more runs in the top of the seventh to take a 17-3 lead, but the rain started to pour and the game had to be stopped with two outs. Since the inning wasn't finished, it did not officially count.
Senior RHP John Frawley picked up right where he left off from his performance last week when he earned A-Sun Pitcher of the Week honors. Frawley fanned four Camels and scattered five hits over 6.0 innings while allowing two earned runs. He improved to 3-1 and recorded his second complete game of the season.
Karmeris finished 3-for-4 with a double and three runs scored while extending his hitting streak to eight games. Thompson went 2-for-3 with a double, a home run and two runs scored while tying his season high of three RBIs.
The Ospreys will return to action at 11 a.m. on Saturday for a doubleheader. The twin bill was originally set for 1 p.m. but was moved up due to expected afternoon rain.
