OXFORD, Miss. – The University of North Florida softball team lost its opening game of the Blue and Red Classic to Ole Miss, before having its second game washed out due to rain.
The Lady Ospreys (5-14) ran into one bad inning against Ole Miss in a 7-3 loss top open the day then headed home after Mother Nature proved to be the clear winner the rest of the day. No more games were completed after UNF and Ole Miss left the field and an adjusted schedule will be played on Saturday.
Devyn Findley was cruising along through the first three innings of play, striking out seven of 10 hitters until two-straight hitters reached on doubles to tie the game 1-1. Ole Miss opened it up after that, scoring six more runs in an inning that Lauren Grill topped off with a line drive grand slam to left.
UNF started the scoring only two innings earlier when Caroline Torre led off the frame with a double and advanced to third on an Amanda Moseley sacrifice bunt. Airen Payne brought Torre home one batter later with a sacrifice fly to left.
The Lady Ospreys loaded the bases in the bottom of the seventh inning before a 26-minute rain delay sent the teams to the dugout. When they returned to action, UNF added a pair of runs when Amanda Moseley was hit by a pitch and Airen Payne reached on an error. UNF brought the tying run to the plate but was not able to do any further damage.
The five teams at the Red and Blue Classic will have to dodge their way around a few raindrops and possibly even a few snow flurries when action continues at the tournament on Saturday.
