LSU leads, UNF tied for 9th at John Hayt Collegiate
PONTE VEDRA BEACH
LSU posted the best round of the day with a team score of 295 (+7) and sits at +15 for the tournament, leading the Sun Devils by two strokes,
Host UNF is tied for ninth with two-time defending champion
Jordan Gibb and Jeff Dennis both posted 76 on a day where the winds were calmer than Sunday's opening round, but the greens were firm and fast and the temperatures started out in the low 40s.
Gibb squeezed a pair of birdies on holes 14 and 16 around a bogey on the 15th hole after teeing off on hole No. 10. He made the turn at 1-under-par before posting five bogeys on his back nine. Dennis was a little more erratic than Gibb, recording four birdies on the day that were erased thanks to three double bogeys. He finished strong, however, with birdies on two of his final four holes. Dennis is tied for 22nd, while Gibb is tied for 55th heading into the final round.
J.C. Horne still leads all of UNF's individuals after shooting 77 on Monday to drop four spots into a tie for 16th.
UNF's Chris Kennedy is tied for 33rd after a 78 while Joe Byun shot an 81 to finish the scoring up for UNF.
Kevin Aylwin (76) and Major Forbess (78) – each competing as individuals – are tied for 41st and 33rd, respectively.
LSU stated its case for the top spot early in the day, taking a one-stroke advantage on the front nine. The Tigers, however, began to fade giving Arizona State – ranked eighth in the nation – a little cushion before rallying with an eagle and a birdie on the final hole to eventually grab the two-stroke lead they now enjoy.
Three LSU players have positioned themselves in the top 15 of the individual standings, led by Andrew Loupe, who shot 70 and tied Coastal Carolina's Zack Byrd for the low round of the day. Loupe is 1-under-par for the tournament and two strokes behind Byrd and
Byrne held the outright lead after Sunday's first round and followed up his 68 with a 73 on Monday.
Sawgrass Country Club has proven to be its typical self once again this week with 32 players shooting 80 or higher on Monday.
The field will get one last crack at the course that formerly hosted The PLAYERS Championship with tee times beginning Tuesday at 8 a.m.
Quotable
Arizona State head coach Randy Lein
We will have the same pairings and same tee-times tomorrow. We are playing well and I would like to see us get a little bit of support for tournament leader James Byrne. If the conditions are similar to the way they have been the last two days, we should be accustomed to them. If they are a little better hopefully we will make more birdies.
LSU head coach Chuck Winstead
This is a hard course with windy conditions. We have only been through two rounds. I am proud of our finish today, we had an eagle and a birdie coming in. With the conditions out here, there can be a five to six-shot swing on one hole. This tournament is a long way from over.
UNF head coach Scott Schroeder
We did a lot of putting today and that was a little disappointing because we played better than yesterday but didn't score better. We had four guys who were competitive but there was not a really good round in the group. We haven't played our best round yet. The hope is that we have a good round and see where that puts us. The weather will probably control what a good round is.
UNF senior Jeff Dennis
The course played tough today. I battled the whole way and shot a 76 and had three double bogeys and four birdies. If I cut out the silly mistakes I should play well tomorrow.
UNF junior Jordan Gibb
I got off to a good start but had a bad stretch of holes that ruined my day.
