UNF will take on Florida Gulf Coast in a dual meet on Wednesday
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – The University of North Florida swimming and diving team returns to action on Wednesday, Nov. 11, as the Ospreys host Florida Gulf Coast in a dual meet at the UNF Aquatic Center. The meet is scheduled for 2 p.m.
“Florida Gulf Coast has won our conference the past two years and they are still an extremely strong team,” stated head coach Beth Harrell. “They have some really fine talent. We have some girls that will race them and do a good job. Depth wise, they might have a little more depth than we do, but I think it will be a tough meet and a very tight meet. We are going to take them head on and see how we do.”
The Ospreys are currently 4-0 in dual meets this season with victories over Florida A&M, College of Charleston, Georgia Southern and Campbell.
Most recently, UNF came away with a 133-66 victory over Campbell in its first home meet of the season. The Ospreys won eight of the first nine swimming events to take a commanding lead. In addition, UNF won both diving events and exhibitioned the final two swimming events.
On the season, the Ospreys have been solid all around. Senior Emily Shaw and junior Lyn Ann Nelson have each won Coastal Collegiate Swimming Association Swimmer of the Week accolades, while true freshman Julia Moomaw garnered CCSA Diver of the Week honors.
In the Ospreys' meet against Campbell, North Florida was led by sophomore Amanda Anderson and junior Caroline Larsson and Nelson.
Anderson posted a pair of victories in individual events and recorded the fastest split time in the 400-yard medley relay. She picked up victories in the 200 individual medley (2:11.89) and in the 200 backstroke (2:11.35).
Larsson won a pair of events on the afternoon. She picked up a victory in the 1,000 freestyle (10:41.30), winning the event by over eight seconds (8.19). Larsson also won the 500 free with a time of 5:11.06.
Nelson collected a pair of victories on the afternoon. She posted a time of 1:54.87 in the 200 freestyle to win the event. The junior also won the 100 freestyle with a time of 54.19, nearly two seconds (1.83) faster than the second place finisher.
Moomaw picked up a pair of victories in the diving events. The Orlando native scored 166.80 in the one-meter dives and 165.90 on the three-meter board.
In addition, freshmen Katie England, Sara Evans and Ashten Crosby posted times in the 200 breaststroke good enough for first, second and third, respectively, but were each exhibitioned with UNF's overall victory secured.
The meet on Wednesday will be the final swimming and diving event for the Ospreys in 2009. The swimming and diving team will return to action on Saturday, Jan. 2, as UNF hosts UNC-Wilmington in a meet set for 11 a.m.
