UNF swimming and diving defeated Campbell, 133-66
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – The University of North Florida swimming and diving team hosted its first home meet of the season and came away with a 133-66 victory over Campbell at the UNF Aquatic Center on Saturday, Nov. 7.
The Ospreys won eight of the first nine swimming events to take a commanding lead. In addition, UNF won both diving events and exhibitioned the final two swimming events.
“Campbell came in and did a really good job,” head coach Beth Harrell commented after the meet. “They swam Georgia Southern yesterday. We knew they would be pretty good competition. Our girls swam really well. We got an opportunity to put some different people in some different events to see how they would step up in preparation for our meet against Florida Gulf Coast. This was first time we got everyone swimming. It was fun and it was great to see how they all competed.”
North Florida was led by sophomore Amanda Anderson and juniors Caroline Larsson and Lyn Ann Nelson.
Anderson posted a pair of victories in individual events and recorded the fastest split time in the 400-yard medley relay. She picked up victories in the 200 individual medley (2:11.89) and in the 200 backstroke (2:11.35). Anderson's time in the 200 IM was just ahead of freshman Sara Evans, who finished in second, and sophomore Taylor Crosby, who claimed third. In the 200 backstroke, Anderson just outreached senior Emily Shaw who finished in second place one-hundredth of a second behind Anderson.
Larsson won a pair of events on the afternoon. She picked up a victory in the 1,000 freestyle (10:41.30), winning the event by over eight seconds (8.19). Larsson also won the 500 free with a time of 5:11.06. Her time in the 500 free was 3.02 seconds faster than junior Megan Boudreau who finished the event in second.
Nelson collected a pair of victories on the afternoon. She posted a time of 1:54.87 in the 200 freestyle to win the event. Nelson finished the 200 free ahead of junior Kalia Martin and freshman Kirsten Orndorff who finished second and third, respectively. The junior also won the 100 freestyle with a time of 54.19, nearly two seconds (1.83) faster than the second place finisher.
True freshman Julia Moomaw picked up a pair of victories in the diving events. The Orlando native scored 166.80 in the one-meter dive and 165.90 on the three-meter board.
Freshmen Katie England, Sara Evans and Ashten Crosby posted times in the 200 breaststroke good enough for first, second and third, respectively, but were each exhibitioned with UNF's overall victory secured.
In the final event of the afternoon, also exhibitioned, the Ospreys' 200 freestyle relay team of freshman Kelsey Bobzien, Shaw, Martin and Nelson posted a time of 1:41.20, which was good enough to claim the event by over a second (1.17).
“We are now moving forward to Florida Gulf Coast,” said Harrell. “That will be a tough one. They are a great team. There will be a lot of preparation between now and then and this meet was part of that preparation. We will look to add on to this. It is nice to have a win.”
North Florida returns to the UNF Aquatic Center on Wednesday, Nov. 11, as the swimming and diving team welcomes Florida Gulf Coast. The dual meet with the Eagles is set for 2 p.m.
