STATESBORO,
“I felt like it would be a one goal game, and we got the break that decided the outcome,” UNF head coach Ray Bunch said. “The guys worked hard and I'm happy with the team's performance.”
UNF (2-4-0) used 16 players in the match, with seven seeing all 90 minutes of play. The Ospreys fired eight shots in the first half, with three on goal, but Georgia Southern (1-2-0) goalkeeper Joey Ralph denied each shot.
Though the Eagles more than doubled the Ospreys' shot total in the second period (14 to six), all but three shots were errant, and UNF senior keeper Tony Restino rejected each one. Restino finished with four saves, upping his Atlantic Sun Conference-best season total to 31.
“It's the first time we've shut out an opponent this season,” Bunch said. “They are a big, strong team and the match was physically challenging. Our guys did a great job battling and holding them scoreless.”
Lowenthal fired his only shot of the a shot from 30 yards out with four minutes left to play that trickled into the net, giving the Ospreys their second win of the season. Ralph temporarily handled the ball, but could not keep control of it, and watched it slip into the goal.
Half of UNF's shots were on target, with junior Matthew Hollyoak taking two of the Ospreys' seven shots on goal. Four other players added a shot on goal.
UNF returns to its home field on Saturday, hosting
