Ospreys leave 10 on base in 13-4 loss

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - The University of North Florida baseball team couldn't dig itself out of an 8-0 hole after the top of the first and fell 13-4 to Stetson at Harmon Stadium.
Sophomore T.J. Thompson led UNF (23-18, 13-11 Atlantic Sun Conference) at the plate, going 2-for-3 with a double and two runs scored. Sophomore Preston Hale posted two RBIs.
Stetson (16-24, 7-14) was able to put the game out of reach from the very beginning, putting up eight runs off sophomore starting LHP John Atteo and sophomore RHP Jonathan Turner in the top of the first. Atteo lasted just a third of an inning and gave up six runs on five hits.
UNF chipped away at the lead in the bottom of the third when Hale blasted a two- run double to right center to drive in Thompson and senior Chad Knight. Sophomore Michael Gropper added another run to the Ospreys' total with an RBI sacrifice fly in the bottom of the fourth to drive in senior Andy Warren.
The Hatters went up 9-3 after putting up another run in the top of the fifth, but the Ospreys battled back with another run in the bottom of the inning when Thompson was able to score when he advanced to third on a wild pitch and Stetson catcher Josh Clendinin wildly threw the ball into left field in an attempt to gun down Thompson.
It looked like UNF would pull to within 9-5 in the bottom of the sixth senior Mike P. Smith crossed the plate on what appeared to be an RBI fielder's choice groundout by senior Chad Knight, but Thompson was called for interference at second base, which gave Stetson a double play.
Four runs in the top of the top of the eighth by Stetson off freshman LHP Robbie Collier crushed any hopes UNF had of making the comeback.
The Ospreys left 10 on base and were just 1-for-11 on RBI opportunities. UNF also committed two errors. After allowing a three-run home run in the top of the first, Turner settled down and didn't allow another run in his last four innings.
