Eagles soar over UNF, 17-4

Ospreys allow season-high 17 runs on 25 hits
STATESBORO, Ga. - The University of North Florida baseball team could not find any answers for the hot-hitting Georgia Southern Eagles on Tuesday, falling 17-4 in a non-conference matchup.
Senior Chad Knight led UNF (23-19) at the plate, driving in all of its runs with two two-run singles and going 3-for-4. Sophomore Michael Gropper finished 2-for-3. UNF pitching allowed a season-high 25 hits.
After GSU (21-18) went up early with two runs in the first and one run in the bottom of the second, the Ospreys made a promising dent in the scoreboard in the top of the fourth to cut it to 3-2. Knight's single up the middle allowed seniors Mike P. Smith and Andy Warren to score.
But back-to-back five-run innings by the Eagles in the fourth and fifth effectively deflated UNF and put the Ospreys on their way to their worst loss of the season. UNF used six pitchers in the game. The first three Osprey relievers to come into the game - Phil Rorabaugh, Matt Boyd and John Atteo - combined for just 2.2 innings and allowed 12 runs (10 earned) on 15 hits. Junior starting RHP J.R. Dunaway picked up the loss after allowing four runs on seven hits in 3.0 innings of work.
The Ospreys put up two more run in the top of the eighth to make it more respectable. Freshman Michael R. Smith led off the inning with a single, and freshman Sam Perry made it runners at first and second when he was hit by GSU's Michael Hester. After Smith and Perry advanced on a wild pitch, Knight drove them home with a single through the right side hole.
UNF will return to action at 7 p.m. on Thursday when it takes on Bethune-Cookman at Harmon Stadium. Live stats will be available on UNFOspreys.com.
