Ospreys take part in touching exhibition
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – For Americans to truly appreciate their freedoms, they need look no further than military personnel.
The University of North Florida baseball team played the U.S. Military All-Stars in a wood bat exhibition on Thursday night at Harmon Stadium and in the process spread the word of the sacrifices the military makes. The U.S. Military All-Stars are made up of active duty personnel from all branches of the military.
Before the game, there was a touching pre-game ceremony that included a flag dedication. Mike Miller, father of Lieutenant John Miller and UNF assistant women's basketball coach Nancy Miller, gave a flag to UNF Director of Athletics Richard Gropper that was flown on a mission in Iraq and was dedicated to UNF by John Miller.
U.S. Military All-Star Ray Judy, a Petty Officer in the U.S. Navy and former minor leaguer in the Los Angeles Dodgers organization, led the All-Stars with three hits and two RBIs. Former UNF pitcher Jarrod Payne started the game for the All-Stars and went 4.0 innings while striking out four.
Freshman Robbie Collier led the Ospreys with four RBIs and two runs scored, while redshirt freshman Paul Morales chipped in with two RBIs in UNF's 11-5 win. The All-Stars took a 5-1 lead in the top of the fifth, but UNF took the lead for good in the bottom of the inning with six runs.
Sophomore Kris Linster picked up the win for UNF in relief after tossing 2.0 innings and allowing two runs on two hits while striking out a pair.
The Ospreys will return to action this weekend when they head to Macon, Ga., to take on Atlantic Sun Conference foe Mercer in a three-game series that begins with a noon doubleheader on Saturday.
