JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – A pair of solo home runs led to an Atlantic Sun Conference doubleheader split between the University of North Florida softball team and Lipscomb at the UNF Softball Complex.
Lady Osprey shortstop Ashley Parenteau hit her fifth home run of the season in the opener to give UNF (17-13, 1-1 A-Sun) a 1-0 win, before her counterpart – Lipscomb shortstop Abby Keese – broke a 4-4 tie with a solo home run to complete a Lipscomb (9-12, 1-1 A-Sun) comeback in the second game.
Devyn Findley (9-6) earned the shutout win in the opener for the Lady Ospreys, and surrendered only one hit in two innings of relief in the second game. Unfortunately for her that one hit was the Keese home run.
Findley was dominant in the opening game, retiring the first 11 hitters she faced before Keese singled in the top of the fourth. She started a rally that saw the Lady Bisons load the bases before Findley worked out of the jam. Lipscomb also put runners in scoring position in the fifth and sixth innings but Findley did not allow a run to cross.
Parenteau finally gave Findley the offensive lift she needed with a solo home run to center in the bottom of the fifth inning. That was the only run Lipscomb's Christen Campbell (4-3) allowed in the complete-game effort. She surrendered six hits in the game and struck out one, but was outdueled by Findley who allowed only two hits and struck out four.
“That's the caliber of pitching that Devyn gives us,” UNF head coach Sonya Wilmoth said. “She has great movement on her ball and she is left handed, which is an asset to any pitching staff to have a lefthander.”
Ashley Battaglia led the Lady Ospreys at the plate with a 2-for-3 performance.
Game two started off on a high note for the Lady Ospreys, which grabbed a 4-0 lead with two runs in the second and third innings. Back-to-back doubles by Findley and Gwen Williams got the scoring started for UNF in the second before Battaglia scored when Parenteau drew a bases-loaded walk.
Heather Hyde scored on an error in the bottom of the fourth to make it 3-0 before Kacie McCloud drove home Williams to make it a 4-0 game.
Tori Ahern and Joanna Kurycki couldn't hold Lipscomb down, allowing the Lady Bisons to score a run in the fourth and three more in the fifth. Ahern allowed only four hits in 4.1 innings of work, but was charged with four runs, two of which were earned. Kellie Sirus drove in two of those runs with a single to left that tied the game in the fifth.
The Lady Ospreys had one last chance to answer Keese's home run, but couldn't push a run across in the seventh after loading the bases with two outs.
“We had opportunities to score, but couldn't get a run across late in the game,” Wilmoth said. “We need to be better when we get a lead. We keep letting opponents slip back into games and we can't do that if we want to be successful.”
Findley, Williams and McCloud all had two hits to lead UNF in the nightcap.
The Lady Ospreys are back in conference action Saturday with a pair of games against Mercer beginning at
