UNF goes cold in falling to Lipscomb, 74-42
BOX SCORE
NASHVILLE, Tenn. - Freshman Josh Slater scored 17 points to lead five Lipscomb players in double figures as the Bisons posted a 74- 42 win over North Florida in Atlantic Sun Conference men's basketball action on Thursday night at Allen Arena.
Lipscomb's Michael Lusk scored eight of the game's first 11 points, and the Ospreys failed to score for the first five minutes, as the Bisons (11-13, 5-5 A-Sun) avenged an upset loss to the Ospreys (1-21, 0-10 A- Sun) last year in Jacksonville. On Thursday, the Bisons shot 48 percent and converted 16 UNF turnovers into 25 points, while UNF shot just 29 percent.
Stan Januska led the Ospreys with 14 points, while Chris Timberlake added nine. UNF was 8-of-18 from 3-point range, a season high for 3-pointers made, but did not attempt a free throw in the game.
"Sometimes you just have to give the other team credit," UNF head coach Matt Kilcullen said. "Lipscomb came out and really got after us, was physical and made the plays they needed to make. It just wasn't our night."
Junior Tom Hammonds, UNF's leading scorer at nearly 14 points per game, failed to score against Lipscomb, missing all 12 field goal attempts in the game.
Lipscomb led 36-21 at halftime, in large part due to UNF's 10 first-half turnovers that led to 15 points, and the Ospreys' cold shooting (28 percent).
In the second half, UNF cut into a 20-point deficit with a 10-0 run -- slicing Lipscomb's lead to 41-31 with 14 minutes to go. A 16-2 run by the Bisons after that all but ended the threat, however, and sent UNF to its 19th consecutive loss and 44th straight away from home.
UNF returns to action on Saturday when it plays at A- Sun foe Belmont. Tipoff is set for 3 p.m. ET at the Curb Events Center.
