UNF leads early, falters late against A-Sun leading Bruins
BOX SCORE
NASHVILLE, Tenn. - Belmont's Justin Hare scored 20 points and the Bruins hit nine 3- pointers in a 79-56 win over North Florida in Atlantic Sun Conference men's basketball action on Saturday afternoon.
Belmont (17-8, 9-2 A-Sun) took sole possession of first place in the conference for at least a day with the victory. UNF (1-22, 0-11 A-Sun) suffered its 20th straight loss.
Chris Timberlake led the Ospreys with 18 points, while Tom Hammonds added 13 and DeVon Jones 11. UNF, which led for the first 10 minutes and trailed by 13 with 11 minutes left, shot 44 percent for the game.
"I was proud of our guys," UNF head coach Matt Kilcullen said. "They really played hard and left it all out on the floor against one of the best teams in this conference. Belmont is a talented team, and they made the plays that good teams make."
Belmont shot 45 percent and hit 9-of-27 shots from 3- point range. The Bruins also hit 24-of-32 free throw attempts, while UNF managed to connect on only 11 of 19. Shane Dansby was the only other Belmont player in double figures with 13 points.
The Ospreys started out strong, spreading out their offense and draining the clock -- which created some high-percentage looks at the basket. UNF hit seven of its first 10 shots and built a 12-5 lead in the first five minutes. Back-to-back 3-pointers by Belmont's Shane Dansby and Justin Hare tied the game at 15 three minutes later, however, and the Bruins took the lead for good on Jon House's free throw with 9:25 to play before halftime.
A six-minute scoring drought for UNF allowed the Bruins to stretch that margin to 37-25 at the intermission.
In the second half, UNF trailed just 53-40 with 11:58 to play. The Ospreys mustered just eight points over the next 10 minutes, however, and couldn't recover down the stretch.
UNF will return to action next week with a pair of games in Jacksonville. The Ospreys face Savannah State on Tuesday night at UNF Arena (7 p.m.) and then travel downtown to Veterans Memorial Arena on Friday night (7:30 p.m.) for a matchup with cross-town rival Jacksonville in the SunTrust River City Rumble.
