UNF wraps up season in Fort Myers

The University of North Florida women's basketball team will conclude the 2007-08 season on Saturday when it pays a visit to Fort Myers, Fla., for the first time in school history to take on Florida Gulf Coast.

At stake for UNF is its first winning season in Atlantic Sun Conference play. The Lady Ospreys come into the game with an 8-7 mark in league play and an overall record of 13-15.

Florida Gulf Coast – in its first season of Division I play – has already secured a winning record in the conference and will have loftier goals on Saturday night. The Eagles (17-8, 12-3) can clinch a share of the league title and a berth in the WNIT with a win and an East Tennessee State loss to USC Upstate in a game that tips at 1 p.m. Florida Gulf Coast will also be out for a little revenge after losing its first contest to UNF on Jan. 7. The Eagles left town with a 0-2 start in conference play, but heated up shortly after that loss and have not cooled off since.

UNF was able to control the paint in that first meeting with forward Shennette Sheffield scoring a career-high 21 points and pulling down a career-high 11 rebounds. The Lady Ospreys held a 37-28 rebounding advantage in that game and held FGCU to 8-of-35 shooting beyond the 3-point arc.

The Lady Ospreys will try to finish strong after dropping a 60-45 contest at Stetson on Thursday night. Sheffield tied her career rebounding high in that game, but a 15-2 Stetson run to start the second half ultimately did in the Lady Ospreys.

Who's Hot: Shennette Sheffield averaged 15 points in three games last week while averaging 17.5 points and 8.5 rebounds in home conference wins against Mercer and Kennesaw State ... she also had a career-high five blocks against KSU ... Shandrea Moore tied a career-high with eight assists against the Lady Owls, while Jennifer Guldager set a new career mark with 14 rebounds in that contest ... UNF pulled down 48 rebounds against KSU, tying for its second highest total of the season.

Quoting Coach Tappmeyer: “We already have more wins than last year with a very young team. I love this team and how they compete and work. The kids are seeing the fruits of their works and they are going to be willing to work harder in the offseason.”
