UNF drops pair in Gainesville
GAINESVILLE, Fla. – University of North Florida pitcher Devyn Findley only gave up four earned runs in 12-plus innings if work at the Aquafina Invitational on Friday, but couldn't get any run support in losses to Notre Dame and Florida.
Findley only gave up one run in a 1-0 loss to Notre Dame before Florida slugged out three solo home runs in a 3-0 victory.
“Florida is a very powerful team,” UNF head coach Sonya Wilmoth said. “Devyn gave us a chance to win both games, but we just didn't hit the ball. We asked a lot of her today. Right now we're not hitting well and I'm not sure what the problem is.”
UNF (7-6) opened the day with a 1-0 loss to Notre Dame, spoiling a performance that saw Devyn Findley (5-3) give up only one earned run on five hits while striking out nine.
The only run of the game came in the top of the fifth on a two-out rally by the Fighting Irish (3-3).
The Lady Ospreys loaded the bases in the bottom of the fourth and fifth, but couldn't come up with a key hit to push a run across. Ashley Parenteau was robbed by two diving stops in the game, one of those coming to end the fifth inning on a ball that looked headed into center field for a base hit.
Findley and Lauren Pulling each had a pair of hits for UNF, while Kacie McCloud and Caroline Torre also had base hits for UNF.
Findley and Florida starter Stacey Nelson battled toe-to-toe for three innings in the team's nightcap before Tiffany DeFelice and Megan Bush hit solo home runs to give the seventh-ranked Gators (16-0) a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the fourth. DeFelice touched Findley again for another solo home run in the sixth.
Findley exited the game two batters later, giving way to senior Tori Ahern, who committed an error to load the bases, before proceeding to work out of the jam without allowing a run. Findley allowed seven hits in all, while striking out four Gators.
Ashley Battaglia collected the only hit of the day for the Lady Ospreys, chopping a single through the middle of the Florida infield in the top of the third.
UNF is back on the field Saturday when it takes on Gardner-Webb at 10 a.m. before entering pool play Saturday and Sunday.
