STATESBORO, Ga. – Gwen Williams and Ashley Parenteau put the UNF career home run race into full gear on Wednesday in a doubleheader sweep of Georgia Southern.
Williams hit her 18th career home run – setting the UNF all-time record – in the opener to help UNF earn a 4-3 win in eight innings. That career mark lasted all of eight innings before Parenteau hit her first home run of the year – and 18th of her career – in game two, leading the Lady Ospreys (7-4) to a 5-1 victory.
“We hit the ball well up and down the lineup today and got a good outing from Tori Ahern in the second game,” UNF head coach Sonya Wilmoth said. “I was happy with the way we kept fighting in the first game, it would have been easy to hang our heads after they came back to tie the game, but we didn't and we came out with the win.”
UNF collected 17 hits overall on the day, banging out nine hits in the opener and eight in the nightcap.
The Lady Ospreys opened the scoring in the first game with a run in the top of the second. UNF strung together three-straight hits in the inning and took that advantage after Ashley Parenteau was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded.
Findley accounted for one of those hits in the second then worked her way out a one-out, bases-loaded jam in the bottom of the second that started with a walk and a base hit. Findley, however, recorded her fourth strikeout of the game and got out of the inning after Michelle Beasley lined out to third baseman Heather Hyde.
Gwen Williams hit a solo home run to center in the top of the fourth before
Williams scored what turned out to be the game-winner in the top of the eighth inning, scoring on a Findley double to right-center to make it a 4-2 contest. Findley (5-1) finally wrapped up the game in the bottom of the eighth, allowing a run, but leaving two runners in scoring position after striking out Lindsey Hopkins.
Along with Williams, Findley and Ashley Battaglia also collected a pair of hits for the Lady Ospreys.
Williams got the scoring started in the second game for UNF, tying the score 1-1 when she scored Hyde on a sacrifice fly in the top of the fourth.
Parenteau put UNF ahead one inning later, blasting a two-run home run to left with two outs to give her team a 3-1 lead before Battaglia made it a 5-1 game in the top of the sixth with her first home run as a Lady Osprey.
Parenteau went 2-for-2 in the second game, while Hyde was 2-for-3 with a run. They helped Ahern (2-2) earn her second-straight win. She gave up only one earned, while not allowing a walk and striking out three.
