UNF improves to 2-3 overall with impressive win over Pride
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - The University of North Florida women's tennis team snapped an early season two-game slide with a resounding 6-1 win over Hofstra on Sunday afternoon at the UNF Tennis Complex.
The Lady Ospreys (2-3) swept all three doubles matches to grab the early 1-0 lead and then made quick work of the Pride (0-3) in singles, getting wins from Natalia Sanchez (6-3, 6-0 at No. 1), Vanessa Sanchez (6-0, 6-2 at No. 2), Ina Durcakova (6-0, 2-0, ret., at No. 3), Victoria Krook (6-1, 6-1at No. 5) and Carolina Melo (6-1, 6-0 at No. 6) to clinch the overall victory.
UNF's only defeat of the day came at No. 4 singles, where Maria Melihova fell 1-6, 6-4, 10-5 to Hofstra's Lauren Clifton in a super tiebreak after the match outcome had been decided.
"This was a good victory for the team," UNF head coach Igal Buberman said. "We started the season facing a couple of tough opponents and having a losing record right off the start can be a little hard sometimes. I am glad the girls got the job done today. We have UCF coming up, and that match will be a lot harder. This victory was key to getting the team back on track."
Next up for the Lady Ospreys is a matchup with UCF in Orlando on Wednesday afternoon. Match time is set for 2 p.m.
