UNF hits just 13 of 33 free throws in falling 75-61 at UNF Arena
BOX SCORE
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - The University of North Florida men's basketball team proved to be its own worst enemy on Thursday night when it squared off against Atlantic Sun Conference foe Gardner-Webb.
UNF (1-19, 0-8 A-Sun) enjoyed its best shooting performance in more than two years from the floor - hitting 54 percent - but couldn't find its stroke at the free throw line in losing 75-61 to the Bulldogs at UNF Arena. UNF missed its first nine free throw attempts in the game and stayed erratic for the remainder of the night - sinking just 13 of 33 from the stripe overall, including a 1-for-11 performance in the first half.
Thomas Sanders led GWU (10-12, 4-4 A-Sun) with 24 points, while Grayson Flittner added 15 points and Aaron Linn 14. The Runnin' Bulldogs shot 48 percent and hit 8-of-21 attempts from 3-point range.
DeVon Jones, Chris Timberlake and Tom Hammonds tied for the UNF scoring lead with 12 points apiece.
"We did a lot of good things in this basketball game," UNF head coach Matt Kilcullen said. "We rebounded well at times, shot the ball well better than we have all season and played solid defense. But we left the win out on the floor at the free throw line. If we hit our free throws, we win the game. It's that simple. That part of the game was very disappointing because we didn't take advantage of our opportunities."
UNF kept things close in the first half despite its inability to capitalize at the free throw line. The Ospreys built a 23-19 lead with 6:05 remaining in the half but couldn't hold it. GWU seized control with a 9-1 run the rest of the way to take a 28-24 lead at the intermission.
In the second half, GWU scored the first seven points to build a 35-24 lead and put the pressure on. UNF sliced its deficit to seven points three times after that but continued to struggle with their free throws down the stretch. The Ospreys were just 12-of-22 in the second half, nearly matching their shooting total from the floor over the final 20 minutes (12-of-24).
The Ospreys were 2-of-12 from 3-point range and committed 18 turnovers. GWU held a 31-30 rebounding edge.
UNF's field goal percentage was the program's second-highest mark since moving to Division I prior to the 2005-06 season. The Ospreys' top shooting performance came against Campbell on Jan. 19, 2006, when they hit 31-of-53 field goal attempts (.585).
UNF returns to action on Saturday afternoon when it faces off against A-Sun foe Campbell at UNF Arena. The women's-men's doubleheader tips off at 2 p.m., with the men's game set for a 4:15 start. The men's game will be aired locally on WBOB-AM 1320 and both contests will be carried live via the Internet at www.ASUN.TV.
