UNF wins at Mercer in dramatic fashion, 53-52
Guldager nailed a 3-pointer with four seconds to play to send UNF (8-8, 3-1 A-Sun) home a winner and give the Lady Ospreys their first road win of the season.
“It was a play coach has drawn up since freshman year and I am confident running it,” Guldager said. “I was wide open it seemed Wide, and I just did what I do in practice. I squared up and hit the shot.”
Mercer (3-13, 0-4 A-Sun) scored the opening two points of the game and never led again until it looked as though it might score the final five points in overtime until Guldager's shot saved a UNF squad that committed a season-high 37 turnovers and watched a 12-point second-half lead turn into a game that went into overtime. The shot came after point guard Juliemay Syquio found her wide open on the left wing and only seconds after the Bears' Karen Dorris gave her squad a two-point lead by hitting one of two free throws on the Mercer offensive end.
“That game ended the Mercer jinx for me,” Guldager said. “It seemed like I could never score here my first two years.”
UNF had an opportunity to win the game in regulation after LaToya Jackson tied it with 12 seconds left, hitting a 3-pointer at the top of the key. The Lady Ospreys, however, turned the ball over and
TaShera Lewis led the Bears with 13 points and nine rebounds, while Cristin Seymour followed her with 12 points.
Guldager was the only Lady Osprey to score in double figures. Syquio followed her with eight points.
Guldager scored four of UNF's first six points and hit two of her first three shots to give the Lady Ospreys a 6-3 advantage in the first four minutes of play. The game trudged along from there as UNF found itself in foul trouble with three starters – Antoinette Reames, Shennette Sheffield and Syquio – taking a seat on the bench with two fouls each. That helped Mercer stay in the contest, as the Bears hit six of their first nine free throws and eventually took a 10-9 lead.
UNF went through a five-minute scoring drought before Dominique Barbosa finally broke it and gave UNF a 12-10 lead after she grabbed an offensive rebound off of her own miss and eventually completed a 3-point play after laying the ball in after her initial missed shot.
The Lady Ospreys closed the opening half on a 14-8 run and held Mercer to one field goal over the last 5:57 of the half to carry a 24-18 lead into the locker room. Guldager led UNF with eight points in the half.
The second half started off similar to the first with Guldager hitting a pair of 3-pointers that eventually gave the Lady Ospreys an 11-point advantage. That second 3-pointer eclipsed Guldager's previous career-high of five made field goals which she set as a freshman at
Mercer put together a 6-0 run and held UNF scoreless for more than three minutes to pull within six points at 35-29. Tiffany Williams finally broke the run with a jumper just outside the paint. The Bears scored the next four points and pulled within four when
Moore scored four straight points to give the Lady Ospreys a 45-42 advantage before Jackson finally tied the game in the closing seconds with a 3-pointer, her first in eight tries during the game.
UNF won the battle of the boards 47-38, but allowed Mercer to take 68 shots in the game compared to 49.
The Lady Ospreys will return home and prepare for a showdown with cross-town rival
