UNF looks for road win

The University of North Florida women's basketball team will close out its first road trip of the season on Monday night when it travels to Mercer.

UNF (7-8, 2-1 A-Sun) has won three of its first four games since the calendar flipped over to 2008, but is still looking for its first road win of the season after dropping its conference road opener to Kennesaw State on Saturday. UNF held an early lead against the Lady Owls, but couldn't find many answers for a team that shot 50 percent in the first half and 45.8 percent from the field for the game.

UNF is 0-5 on the road this season with its only win away from home coming against Texas A&M Corpus Christi at a neutral site.

Prior to the Kennesaw State loss, the Lady Ospreys put together a three-game winning streak, their longest of the season; toppling Savannah State, Stetson and Florida Gulf Coast at home. UNF's defense held the key to those three wins and the Lady Ospreys come into the Mercer matchup with the best defense in the conference as well as the 12^th best scoring defense in the nation.

While UNF has won because its defense this season, Mercer comes into the game as the 12^th-ranked defense in the league, giving up 73.4 points a game.

UNF takes on a depleted Mercer squad Monday that has been forced to borrow a couple of players from its volleyball squad because of injuries. The Bears are coming off a 74-60 loss to Jacksonville on Saturday. Sarah Russell leads the Bears and is 16^th in the conference, averaging 10.4 points a game.

Who's Hot: Willonda Windham and Shennette Sheffield each had a double-double last week ... Windham scored 11 points and pulled down a career-high 12 rebounds against Savannah State, while Sheffield scored 21 points and pulled down 11 rebounds against Florida Gulf Coast ... Shandrea Moore has scored in double figures in her last two games and seven of her last nine.

Quoting Coach Tappmeyer: “I think we learned a lesson from our first conference road game. We didn't play with our usual intensity on the defensive end and that's what we pride ourselves on. We had three starters on the bench in foul trouble against Kennesaw and had to bring freshmen off the bench. We can't afford to do that and win.”
