JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - The University of North Florida women's tennis team put forth a dominating performance at the College of Charleston Fall Invitational this past weekend, walking away with titles in two of the three singles flights and another in doubles.
The Lady Ospreys placed four of the six singles finalists along the way, with Natalia Sanchez knocking off teammate Vanessa Sanchez in the A flight final, while Ina Durcakova defeated fellow Osprey Carolina de Melo in the C flight final. Newcomer Maria Melihova also defeated fellow rookie teammate Victoria Krook in the B flight consolation final. In doubles, Durcakova and de Melo won the C flight title with an 8-4 win over Georgetown's Elizabeth Sullivan and Alex Sebia on Sunday.
"It was a good overall performance," UNF head coach Igal Buberman said. "I especially congratulate the girls who won their flights. I am very happy with how we are starting the fall. This is a new team, and we have new goals for the upcoming spring season. The girls understand the type of effort that is required in order for us to reach those goals. This past weekend was a strong indication that we are on the right path."
Natalia Sanchez won all four of her weekend matches in straight sets, including a 6-2, 6-2 semifinal victory over College of Charleston's Laura Boza. Vanessa Sanchez had a more difficult path to the finals, overcoming a one-set deficit to rally past Charleston's Holly Dowse 2-6, 6-3, 6-2 in her semifinal match.
De Melo and Durcakova also breezed through the singles competition en route to the finals, with both players winning in straight sets. Durcakova won 6-2, 6-0 in the final match to remain perfect during the weekend.
In doubles, Durcakova and de Melo enjoyed a first-round bye before knocking off High Point's Becky Carr and Jody Wicks 8-4 in the semifinals.
The Lady Ospreys play in their second fall tournament this weekend when they travel to Gainesville to participate in the three-day Gator Fall Invitational, beginning Friday.
