UNF solid at Gator Invite

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - The University of North Florida women's tennis team traveled to the University of Florida campus last weekend to compete in the Gator Fall Classic and test its mettle against some of the nation's best.
The Lady Ospreys squared off against three teams that finished last season ranked in the top 30 nationally in a "hidden duals" format at UF's Ring Tennis Complex. UNF posted three wins in doubles and four singles victories during the three- day event, which pits teams against each other in individual matchups.
UNF competed in the events with sixth-ranked Florida, 28th-ranked South Florida and 30th-ranked Florida International.
"We knew coming into the weekend that we had a tough task ahead of us," UNF assistant coach Rodrigo Puebla said. "Our players were prepared and played solid tennis. This is the first time in our program history that we were invited to such a prestigious tournament, and I believe we left a good impression."
Natalia Sanchez had the biggest win of the weekend for the Lady Ospreys when she upended 92nd-ranked Egle Petrauskaite of Florida International, 7-5, 2-6, 1-0 (10-5) in a singles matchup on Sunday.
"Natalia really stepped up her level of play and performed the way we will need her to in the spring," Puebla said.
In doubles, the team of Carolina de Melo and Ina Durcakova won their first two matches against FIU and USF before falling 8-1 to the 31st-ranked Florida tandem of Whitney Benik and Anastasia Revzina on Sunday.
The Lady Ospreys will play their final fall event Oct. 12-14 at the UNF Fall Invitational.
