TEMPE , Ariz. - The University
of North Florida softball team pushed second-ranked
Arizona State for six innings of play on Friday, but fell
victim to a late rally in a 12-9 loss at Farrington
Stadium.
UNF belted out four home runs - two of which came
off the bat of Mallory Butler - but couldn't hold onto a 9-
6 advantage.
Arizona State scored six runs in its final two at-bats to
avoid UNF's upset bid. Katie Brosky (3-4) took the
loss for UNF, while Arizona State's Megan Elliott (8-1)
hit the game-winning home run in the sixth inning,
while also earning the win in relief.
The Lady Ospreys traded punches with ASU over the
first three innings of play, with each team scoring six
runs. UNF charged out of the gates with four runs in
the top of the first, as the first four batters reached and
scored. Heather Hyde highlighted the inning with a
three-run home run.
The Sun Devils answered with four runs of their own
in the bottom of the first before Butler and Kelli Rutenbar hit back-to-back home runs to give UNF a 6-
4 advantage in the top of the second.
Butler led UNF with four RBIs, while Rutenbar was 3-
for-3 with a pair of runs.
Eight of UNF's nine starters had a hit in the contest,
as the Lady Ospreys out-hit Arizona State 11-10.
UNF took a 9-6 lead in the fifth with Butler's second
home run of the game, a three-run shot to left. ASU
took charge from there, scoring four runs in the fifth
and two more in the sixth.
The Lady Ospreys will get another shot at Arizona
State on Saturday night after taking on UC-Santa
Barbara in a 2:30 p.m. EST contest. The game was
originally scheduled for a 1 p.m. start, but has been
pushed back.
