TEMPE , Ariz. - The University of North Florida softball team closed out the Sun Devil/Wilson DiMarini Invitational with a 2-0 loss to Houston Sunday at Farrington Stadium.
Two Lady Osprey errors led to both of Houston's runs, as UNF (8-10) closed out the event with a 2-3 record.
"Overall, it was a great experience for kids being our first trip across country as a team," UNF head coach Sonya Wilmoth said. "We held our own in every game we played. We proved we can compete at the highest level and I hope this will prove to be a great learning experience for us."
After four and a half scoreless innings, Houston finally scratched the scoreboard in the bottom of the fifth, taking advantage of a couple of Lady Osprey errors to grab a 2-0 lead.
UNF's best threat of the game came in the top of the sixth when Amy Higgs reached on an error to lead off the inning before moving to second two batters later on a Christina Evans base hit. That's all the further they would get, as Gwen Williams and Heather Hyde each struck out to end the threat.
The Lady Ospreys also put a runner in coring position in the top of the second when Heather Hyde led off the inning with a base hit and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt. That's all the further she would get, however.
Houston pitcher Angel Shamblin recorded nine strikeouts on the day. Katie Brosky (4-4) suffered the loss for UNF, allowing three hits in six innings of work, while striking out one and giving up a walk.
UNF returns to Jacksonville this week for its home opener on Wednesday, hosting Georgia Southern at 3 p.m.
