JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - The University of North Florida men's tennis team had its six-match winning streak snapped with a 4-3 loss to 50th-ranked Denver in Tampa over the weekend.
The Ospreys (10-7) came out strong - collecting the doubles point for an early 1-0 lead - but they couldn't sustain that momentum through singles play in losing for the first time in a month.
"This was a very tough match," UNF head coach Igal Buberman said. "We took the lead after the doubles point and had a great chance going into singles, but we could not capitalize. A win like this could have helped us move into the (national) rankings. We need to learn to take advantage of the chances we get. We hope to finish our last three matches in good standing and try to reach our goal of being nationally ranked."
The UNF doubles tandem of Elad Gabay and Eduardo Pereira upended Denver's Timo Kienle and Kalle Rosen 8-6 at the No. 3 position after Denver took a win at No. 1. At the No. 2 position, the team of Matias Sigal and Ben Smith then battled to a 9-8 (7) victory to give the Ospreys the doubles point.
In singles, Denver got three straight-set wins at the No. 1, 4 and 5 positions. UNF's Javier Ferrin captured a victory at the No. 3 spot (6-2, 6-3), meanwhile, and Leonardo Gomes did the same at No. 6 (6-3, 6-1) for the Ospreys.
Everything came down to No. 2 singles from there, where Denver's Nejc Smole rallied from a one-set deficit to knock off Pereira (6-7, 6-4, 6-2) and clinch the match victory for the Pioneers.
The Ospreys return to action on April 5 when they travel to Daytona Beach to face Bethune-Cookman. Match time is set for 2 p.m.
