Oct. 6, 2007
Box Score
BUIES CREEK, N.C. - Akil DeFreitas scored the game's lone goal and North Florida dealt Campbell just its third loss in Atlantic Sun men's soccer regular-season play since 2005 on Saturday at the Eakes Athletic Complex.
UNF (4-5-0, 3-1-0 A-Sun) won its third 1-0 decision in four league games and in so doing, ended Campbell's four-match unbeaten streak. The Camels (6-3-1, 2-1-1), who were the coaches' preseason pick to win the A-Sun this season, had three victories and one draw in their last four outings, but were shutout for just the second time this year.
The Ospreys took over at least a share of first place in the A-Sun with the win.
Since the start of the 2005 Campbell, Campbell owns a 13-3-3 record vs. its conference opponents in the regular season. UNF handed Campbell two of those setbacks, the first coming in 2005 at Hodges Stadium in Jacksonville.
On Saturday, DeFreitas hit a right-footed shot that sailed just under the crossbar and into Aaron Johnson's net in the 41st minute.
Despite holding a 14-7 edge in shots, the Camels placed just three on goal; all saved by UNF keeper Andrew Calise, who registered his third shutout of the season. In fact, Calise has allowed just one goal in four conference games this season. UNF finished with three shots on target
"Obviosuly, we are very proud," UNF head coach Ray Bunch said. "Our guys played hard. This win shows that we can really play when we are mentally into it. We are definitely on the right road. We have just got to keep working hard. Tonight was a great win, and we will enjoy it tonight, but we have look to the next game and not any further than that."
Campbell saw three clear scoring chances go without reward in the second half. In the 52nd minute, Khalil Johnson's cross from the left flank fell to the feet of Vince Petrasso, who found himself alone with Calise at the back post. However, Petrasso's right-footed blast sailed high and with of the upper right corner.
Less than two minutes later, Campbell's Austin Skakle lined a left-footed effort from just outside the box that sailed just wide of the left post.
UNF played the final 10:39 with a man disadvantage after Luke Gable received his second yellow card in a seven-minute span. However, the Camels were able to get off only one shot - struck wide left by Bryan Dornseif - in the stretch.
For the seventh time in eight starts this year, Campbell keeper Aaron Johnson yield fewer than two goals. He finished with a pair of saves.
UNF returns to action this coming weekend with a pair of home games -- first against Stetson on Friday at 7 p.m. and then on Sunday against Florida Gulf Coast at 2 p.m., both at Hodges Stadium.
