JACKSONVILLE, Fla. (Nov. 17, 2004) - The University of North Florida women's basketball team spread the wealth around the court Wednesday evening in a 77-48 victory against Flagler College at UNF Arena.
Eleven different players scored for the Lady Ospreys (1-0) to help them open the 2004-05 campaign with a victory.
"This team has been unselfish throughout preseason and it showed again on the court tonight," UNF head coach Mary Tappmeyer said. "If we have three to four kids that can score in double figures, or close to double figures, we are going to be tough to stop offensively."
UNF's Jackie Beik tied Flagler's Brittney Garmon for a game-high 15 points, while Alana Mountfield followed her with 13 points for the Lady Ospreys.
Beik finished the game 7-of-9 from the field and also collected a pair of rebounds and two assists. Included in her 15 points was her first career 3-pointer.
"Jackie is really going to shine now that it's her junior year," Tappmeyer said. "She's a very good shooter. She's really more of a finesse post player."
UNF got off to a fast start, scoring the first 14 points of the game. The Lady Ospreys continued to roll from there and went into the locker room with a 42-23 halftime advantage.
Kim Smith and Brittney Davis set the early pace for UNF, scoring the team's first nine points. Smith finished the contest with 10 points and six rebounds to go along with a block. Davis didn't see much of the court in the second half, finishing the game with nine points.
"We came out, played hard and executed on offense," Smith said. "We also played well on defense and the final score reflects that."
Tappmeyer mixed and matched lineups in the second half before watching her team finally salt the game away.
Junior transfer Karli Knudsen scored nine points on 3-of-7 shooting.
Caren Fiorelli followed Garmon's 15 points with 14 points on 5-of-9 shooting.
UNF returns to the court Saturday at 2 p.m. to host Edward Waters as part of a doubleheader with the men's team. The game can also be heard live on the web at www.unf.edu/sports.
