JACKSONVILLE, Fla. (Nov. 21, 2004) - The University of North Florida women's basketball team took the floor with a heavy heart Saturday in a 56-41 win against Edward Waters College at UNF Arena.
Despite having to endure the death of guard Ericia Hatcher's mom, Angela, UNF upped its record to 2-0 on the season. Angela Hatcher passed away Thursday after suffering a heart attack.
UNF held the lead throughout and held off a second-half charge by EWC (3-4) to capture the win.
"EWC played well," UNF head coach Mary Tappmeyer said. "This is their seventh game of the year and they looked a little more seasoned in their offensive sets."
UNF center Brittney Davis earned her first double-double of the season, pulling down a game-high 11 rebounds to go along with 11 points.
"Brittney does a lot of good things on offense and defense," Tappmeyer said. "They had nobody to guard her. If she gets good looks, she will knock shots down."
After starting the game 0-for-7 beyond the 3-point arc, the Lady Tigers' Ericka Golding hit two in a row. Amber Lee followed that with a 3-pointer of her own, and UNF's 15-point advantage quickly melted to six.
That's all the closer Edward Waters would get to the lead. UNF went on an 11-0 run from there to take a 52-35 advantage with 6:35 to play. EWC only scored six points the rest of the way.
Latrika Allen led the Lady Tigers with 14 points, while Golding finished with 12.
Dyanne Busse - making her first career start - provided the Lady Ospreys with an early spark, knocking down a pair of 3-pointers in the first half to help the Lady Ospreys to a 30-23 advantage at the break. Busse finished the game with 10 points, two assists and a steal.
Karli Knudsen picked up where Busse left off in the first half, hitting a couple of 3-pointers down the stretch along with a driving layup. She finished 4-of-9 from the field for 11 points.
Kim Smith led the Lady Ospreys with 12 points to go along with six rebounds.
UNF returns to the court on Friday when it hosts the Lady Osprey Thanksgiving Classic. North Florida takes on Francis Marion at 4 p.m. in its first game of the classic, before playing Bowie State on Saturday at 4 p.m.
