Melisa Hyams, an Olympic diver and U.S. national champion, joined the University of North Florida swimming and diving staff during the 2003-04 season as the head diving coach.
In her time at UNF, she has been named Diving Coach of the Year at the team’s conference championship meet four times. She picked up her first honor in 2005-06 at the National Independent Conference Meet after coaching Amber Price to a conference title and Diver of the Year honors.
In 2006-07, she was named the Pacific Coast Swimming Conference Diving Coach of the Year after guiding Emily Eisenhower to a conference championship and Diver of the Year honors. Eisenhower also qualified for the NCAA Diving Zones.
Hyams helped Eisenhower repeat the feat in 2007-08 at the inaugural Coastal Collegiate Swimming Conference Championships and earned another Diving Coach of the Year award. Eisenhower also qualified for the NCAA Diving Zones earlier that season.
Hyams picked up her fourth Diving Coach of the Year accolade during the 2009-10 season. She guided walk-on diver and true freshman Julia Moomaw to All-CCSA honors at the Coastal Collegiate Swimming Association Championships. In addition, Hyams directed Moomaw to four CCSA Diver of the Week awards.
In 2011-12, Hyams once again led Moomaw to All-CCSA accolades in the 3-meter competition. In addition to All-CCSA accolades, Moomaw and true freshman Monica Rice picked up Coastal Collegiate Swimming Association Diver of the Week honors during the 2011-12 season under Hyams tutelage.
Voted No. 61 in the Top 100 Athletes of the Century by the Florida Times Union, she received first place in 3-meter diving in the 1996 Olympic trials in Indianapolis and went on to take home fourth place in 3-meter diving at the 1996 Olympic games in Atlanta.
In 1994, she won both the 1-meter and 3-meter in the U.S. National Championships. She was a six-time member of the U.S. National team (1991-95) where she never ranked less than sixth on the 1-meter and 3-meter in nine national championships.
At the Alamo International meet in 1993 she received a silver medal for the 1-meter and also a bronze medal for the 3-meter. In 1992 at that same meet, she won the gold medal for the 1-meter.
Hyams is married to Scott Hyams and the couple has three boys, Dean, Colt and Reed. She hails from Orange Park, Fla., and is a 2001 graduate of North Florida.
